ok Pundits it is time to make your predictions.
Sir Alex Ferguson has announced his imminent retirement at the end of this season.
Jose Mourinho is one of the favourites and I could see the appeal for him, he might like the thought of being manager of a club that would actually reward and support success instead of sacking him for it smile
David Moyles of Everton is the favourite of those who believe they know about such things.
Whoever it is, it will be a harder than usual task, convincing the fans, convincing the players and living up to the best ever record a manager of an English football club has ever achieved.
So who is your prediction.
Cantonna perhaps ? don't laugh, he spends more time at Old Trafford than he does in France and has done so ever since he retired. Oustider for sure but not impossible, will it be one of the choice favourites or a rank outsider ?
My prediction - NOT Keegan :)
its already nailed on.....David Moyles.....he is just a mini Ferguson and will carry on tradition of bringing through and developing youth. He is the sort to honour the traditions of the great club. It nice to see a british manager been given the chance to manage at the highest level as well.
& the hardest job in football . . . trying to not trip over a blade of grass and demand a penalty, not spitting, not biting and not trying to behave like a bunch of overpaid pratts.
. . . . sorry, football isn't my game.
On the upside on this story, the refs will be glad to see the back of Ferguson.
Yes let's just over pay pop stars and actors who earn far more than footballers do for less time spent at work eh! or save the money and give it to the bank managers and CEO's who make a total mess of the company and give them even more bonus's.
When Beckham met Posh he was worth £5 million, She was worth £28 million, he was fast becoming the best crosser of the ball and play maker in his profession, she was another female with a half decent body who with the help of the studio equipment and the songwriters could make a record.
Why do people who don't like football (and a few who do) think that footballers at the top of their profession earn too much when they know they have such a short working lifespan at that level.
Cliff, still earning after a lifetime of working, Michael Jackson, dead and still his estate earns a fortune, Actors still making movies after 50 years in the business, I am not saying they don't earn their high salaries but why are only footballers singled out ?
Why not golfers and racing car drivers who become millionaires through their work ?
What about the man in charge of Stafford Hospital who was ultimately responsibe for the chaos there that killeds hundreds if not thousands of patients who left there to go to an even higher paid position in the NHS ?
At least footballers don't get public salaries or involuntary money from your taxes they get it from the popularity of the sport, the sponsorships that wouldnt sponsor them if it wasnt so popular, the TV companies that know they can make money out of showing the sport, the fans who pay for replica kits and to see them play ie money gained volunrarily.
If you don't want to pay their wages, dont buy the kit, dont go to the matches, dont pay for Sky Sports.
Ask the players at Port Vale or Acrington Stanley why they think an average of £50 grand a year is not excessive.

sorry Mids, yes that old apple. I don't buy the kit or go the matches and don't have sky let alone sky sports. Rather than hijack your post should I set up another one to discuss role models in modern society ?

Sorry Mids, MrsG here, as you can tell, MrG isn't a fan of football. Bet you wished we'd stayed in the 'corner' lol
Absolutely not Gerty, the subject is football and everyone is entitled to their opinion on the subject, I respect your right to your views even if I don't agree with them, but actually I do agree that footballers are too high paid, I just don't think it fair to single them out in a world were so many are too highly paid for what they do and many of them not worthy of any pay whatsoever for what they do.

I don't have a problem with high pay in any profession (as long as they deserve it) but I would single footballers out as having a key role to play in ensuring the younger generations have a good grounding in such areas as sportmanship, manners and fair play something that I believe doesn't come across especially in the higher leagues. However I will confess Mids that I very rarely watch any football so my opinion can be completely disregarded as it isn't based on regular or recent knowledge.

yes smile
There are many people in this world who are paid far far to much for the job they do but personally i LOVE football and love watching it so i am happy that they are paid so much because i enjoy watching them play smile
i prefer footballers to other "celebraties" (yes i cant spell but i dont care :) )
" Who wants the 2nd hardest job in English Football "
yea....guess the vacant post as the new Wolves manager is the hardest of all !!!!
And as it happens it looks like a certain Mr Ferguson may well be taking over there !!!!!
yes smile
It is about time we had a new thread starter in here !!
Dinner first . . .
I would like to see more fair play in football, but footballers are human, unlike Politicians they are not paid to set an example though setting an example would be a good thing.
There are some admirable actions, for example the Guard of Honour given to the Manchester United players by the Arsenal players when they took to the pitch a couple of weeks ago, the actions of Robbie Fowler when he refused a penalty but sadly the most media coverage is of the bad examples.
I don't think that as many British Footballers are as financially motivated as some would have us believe, yes they earn a lot but many could earn even more by choosing to go abroad but choose to stay in the British Leagues, Giggs, Fowler, Beckham (who would have stayed at Utd if he could have) Shearer and others could have earned much more in europe in their haydays.
pls pls pls, not the 'chosen one'

Yes Rob you are probably right. Jose is going back to the club where the fans love him. I have a friend who has promised me I can have one of his season tickets next year for the first home game of the season. I dreamed that Jose would one day come back to the Bridge and until it is confirmed by the man himself, I will ignore the media crap and hold my breath that it does indeed happen.
I think it is a cert that Moyles will be the new Man Utd manager. He would have been one of the few managers I would have liked to see at Chelsea IF Jose were not to go back. A fine manager and has done a brilliant job at Everton with very little money.
