Yes, seems he ran into the back of a car whilst training in Italy. Same thing nearly happened to me today when some schmuck overtakes me and then slams on to turn left. No idea what happened with Cavendish, or what the circumstances were, but running into the back of someone is "normally" pretty avoidable.
