Dear Kenty...
I insinuated nothing ....you inferred incorrectly
I said... that the cross of St. George has in many peoples minds become associated with the far right and an unthinking blind nationalism best typified by the tabloid newspapers....I don't think I'm wrong.
I think you should perhaps read my post again....I was expressing one of those OPINIONS you are so adamant that you're entitled to hold....can I not have one ?

That is rubbish as well you know.....You said " I, and I believe many people associate the cross of St. George with a type of blind nationalism that appalls me"
That is not me inferring that is you making a statement!
You are now changing your wording to include tabloid newspapers, which IS your opinion to have. Funny how you did not mention newspapers in your orginal rant.
Your comments are as dangerous as what the BNP spout.
Others can see very clearly exactly what you stated and what YOU believe. I hope your comments can be seen by many as to why we have so many problems in this country.
Funny I even found out that the Scout movement have St'George as their patron, and the scouts have been going a damn sight longer than the National Front or the BNP!
One thing that is right is that with people with views like yours around, the newspapers are right about certain organisations wanting to ban St'Georges day, everything should be done to prevent them from expressing such offensive rules.
Yes there are I have no doubt people like you who believe and hold the same views as you do, but thank goodness I believe most would find it at best laughable and at worst vile.
As you are determined to misinterpret my post let me clarify .....I do not believe and have not asserted that everyone who flies the cross of is a rascist...read the same for blind nationalism.
I said and believe (and this is the last time)that many people associate the flag with the far right, rascism and blind nationalism (I added the tabloid bit for clarity)does this post satisfy you? or are you going to deliberately misinterpret it in order to excuse your next rant ?

Being a simple country boy, I know nothing of such things, to my shame. I do however remember, and have found memory's of the flag flying from the village church bell tower every year.

Of coarse, but if some one has hijacked some thing, all the more reason not to allow them to do so
I would rather see the union flag rescued from unsavoury association .....I see myself as primarily British....the cross of St. George is something for football matches
Can I vote for 26 October, King Alfred's Day.
Apart from that I agree with everything you say, but I will give my second vote to Trafalgar Day.

Saints days were celebrated as holy days,a chance to escape the drudgery of work, let your hair down and for a few pray to the saint for intercession before the throne of God..The fact Saint George's day was celebrated throughout the medieval period and up to the 18th century has very little to do with patriotism, trafalga day was a far more popular expression of nationalistic fervour.

Attempting to see religion through modern secular eyes often leads to a misunderstanding of the motivations of those fact is St Georges day has been turned into a commercial opportunity ,nothing to do with i was young St Georges day was rarely commented on,the same for St Patrick's day,ask an Irish person how they feel about the reimport of the american paddys day celebration.
Claiming that St Georges day in some way represents something is not only historically inaccurate but shows that the marketing men have again been able to sell a concept to the uneducated and ill informed.

Ah, May Day, we can march our troops down the High Street. Oh sorry they are to busy dieing in a miss-directed war. I can not say to much in praise of the Officers and Men in Afghanistan, but I think they would be doing a better job at home. Still now they are there, it will take time to get out.

well i celebrated today by not only flying the flag but making it myself smile

Not all the users of this site live in England, and not all of us are English.

your right i`m british but to me my patron saint is st george and the french where not offended last week when i flew the cross of st george in fact it made a very good talking point
sorry if your not english i cant help where you was born loon
I'm not flying anything. I'm "Welsh", a term I use loosely because although I was born in Wales, lived in Wales my entire life and speak Welsh better than a lot of the locals where I grew up (and can actually speak it at all compared to the locals where I am now!), I'm still estranged by the "Welsh" for my English accent (English parents) and being 1st language English. For that reason I feel absolutely no patriotism for the dragon at all, and equally as little for Britain as a whole.
Historically it's undeniable that Britain WAS brilliant. Biggest empire, wealth, power etc etc. But that's all in the past. Now Britain has little/nothing to offer any more. The pound is beginning to fail yet we still cling onto it instead of making the wise move to the Euro. We've (politically) simultaneously become the lap dog of both the US and the EU, we've virtually forbidden ourselves from having national pride for fer of offending someone else (to a small extent isn't that the point?) and our industries are failing, being undercut in both price and quality of those abroad because our greed is pricing us out of the market.
In my eyes, Britain is failing, I'm slightly embarrassed to be British and I can't wait until job opportunities arise such that I can jump ship.

how very dare you how would a family of scroungers survive if you desert and run away but i can only say do it quick before you become (the prisoner "i am not a number" )
if only it wasn`t so true !!!!
Countrys in the European Union such as France and Spain complain that the British perpetuate their anti european arrogance by not renaming landmarks that glorify inter european conflicts which, they say, is not in the spirit of the modern day European Union.
I refer to landmarks such as WATERLOO Staion and TRAFALGAR Square.
(imo) St PANCRAS, as the Euro Star Hub Should be renamed.
All change at 'AGINCOURT' has a nice ring to it.
How's that for a 2 finger salute?
lol
This is of course nonsense.

Ben,
Will you still be pro Euro Union when we get an increase in the UK's annuall contributions to Brussels to bail out or shore up the failing poorer member countrys whose migrant members cross through many countrys to their chosen destination of soft touch UK?
Did that Panarama program not strike a chord in you that maybe We are really going to top 70 million people in the UK and very soon?
If Labour and the Lib-Dems have their way then the Immigrant floodgates will open even wider.
There may be trouble ahead and just like a volcano, I fear it is just a matter of Time and Pressure before 'civil conflict' on a grand scale erupts throughout the UK.
No Rob, my father turned to me as Enoch Powell raged on about his rivers of blood 40 years ago and said to me son "dont worry about the foreigners its bastards like him you have to keep an eye on". Wise man my father.

That is one view of one side of the coin Ben but 40 years ago we did not have the volume of immigrants that Enoch Powell predicted and the Islamic take over intent that came with the massive influx that we see all around us today which is still increasing.
Ben, with respect to your father,
What wise words do you feel would he have about The state of the UK today?

Simple northumbrian lass here, can someone please explain what they are so scared off?
Difficult one as I do not feel as strongly as many here, but I do have some fears, the main one being, an infrastructure that can barely cope with the people currenty living in this country
Yaknow my dad would read these forum and say why dont u all stop whinging and shag each other rigid. Randy wise man my father.
Seriously tho the fears of incomers swamping the nation probably go back 400 years its never as bad as its made out. Of course who ever worried about the Norman invasion probably said I told you so.

With the invasion of the Normans and the way they changed the established way of life then the Brits, would have had to say 'I told you so' under their breath for fear of upsetting the French speaking Norman invading conquerers.
Many of the freedoms we take for granted today will be gone in our childrens life time if the UK becomes an Islamic state c/w Sharia Law.
I do not want that to happen-ever.
It will happen because of our own apathy to stop it. Open your eyes and take a good look around at the changes that have already happened and know that more are coming.
Do you want someone in the future to be saying 'I told you so' after it is too late?
As an immigrant family, who's ancestors came over with the Normans, I would respectfully request that the "anti Norman" brigade withdraw their racist remarks., wink
And don't get me started on the Roman. What did the Romans ever do for us.....?
.....apart from sanitation and roads. :giggle:
