Support for the venerable Windows XP operating system ended yesterday.
It means that there will be no more official security updates and bug fixes for the operating system launched 13 years ago by Microsoft.
Statistics suggest 20-25% of all users have stuck with XP despite the fact that there have been three major releases of Windows since its debut in October 2001.
German AV-Test group said, "Malware writers go for the low hanging fruits because it's a lot easier to infect systems running on an old Windows XP operating system compared to brand-new Windows 8.1, with all its built-in security features", particulkarly as Windows XP users topped the list of victims cyber-thieves targeted.
Whilst Microsoft have provided Windows Upgrade Assistant to check if your PC meets the system requirements for Windows 8 / Windows 8.1 very few older computers are able to run.
However as Windows 7 is still supported, then perhaps the the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor might be a better option for some.
Lets all ignore Vista banghead the initial replacement for XP.
Hope this helps any one still with XP
Linux?

Good idea- a hideous clusterfuck of an OS, glad i jumped ship to Mac back then

Linux?

which version / distribution ?
last time I checked over 50 different distributions/versions and that's before you start on the Koppix or others. Therefore suggest if people still on XP they'll probably prefer a Windows version rather than having to learn Linux and how to configure, hunt for drivers, etc.
Windoze? Whats that? ..... oh that windoze, you mean the operating system that has more bugs than the Amazon Rain Forest, more patches than patched and more updates than there are dates?
An Apple a day keeps the bugs/patches/updates away....

*takes Cubes Apology and stores it for a later date*
Allow me.. *clears throat*
Firstly, the vast majority of iPad app updates are via the App (not to be confused with Apple) developer (third party) so not really Apple updates are they eh? *poke*
Secondly (nose in air, little finger sticking out) iPad is ios so not the Apple Desktop Os of the current Mavericks (osx 10.9) flavour where stability for the most part rules. While it is conceded Mavericks along with it's predecessors SnowLeopard/Mountain Lion has an amount of bug fixes/updates marched out occasionally it is nowhere near the bajillion or so the likes of Windoze churns out to it's fading fan base.
Thirdly and perhaps the most important point is that you are a SH Moderator & should know better than to besmirch the good name of the Apple at the same time as flipping me the bird particularly when blathering on about your irritations of the iPad. I've been left with no choice but to consider reporting your profile (insert a disgusted look here)

Go get 'im Toots :lol2:
All this and only trying to help those still on XP now it's out of support.
Ho well
As for Apple, one per day didn't keep the Doctors away - ask SJ
rolleyes
As for Windows , Apple, Google Chrome, Android, Unix, Linux, IBM, VCE/vBlock, Tandems, etc. ...... they all issue patches and updates regularly, quite often usually for interactions with applications being run on them, fact of life.
Don't worry HnS, there's lots of tongues in cheeks going on. :lol2: And it all helps to keep the thread at the top of the pile. ;)
Back to the original subject: we have a small netbook which runs XP. The only reason it still does is because it's not man enough to have anything else on it, and that's why they shipped it with XP. I have been thinking about switching it to Linux, but to be honest it gets so little use now we have iPads that it might just become landfill. confused
Cubes - we know
lol
Similarly an old netbook virtually never used but good reference when had some friends still on XP who'd ring with queries, otherwise Win 8/8.1 Pro on one of the desktops with separate VM's of XP, Vista, and Win 7 to fulfill that role (Granted SM's configred TeamViewer on all friends and family ones now for doing 'support').
Re old Netbooks, did know someone who'd wiped theirs and configured as a very basic Home Server as a trial, though heard they'd liked and migrated that role to an old PC and re-configured the Netbook as a print server rather than scrapping it.

Now that sounds an excellent idea
