As I write this, your weekend would seem to be nearly over, so I hope you managed to find something suitable, and you're both enjoying it.
As far as citybreaks go, I'd be sticking to the tried and tested. London or Brighton if you're staying in the u.k., then Amsterdam or Paris as nearby viable alternatives.
It sounds like you might be folks who would enjoy the company of likeminded people. Perhaps, just as an ongoing thing, you might benefit from going to one of the bigger socials, a bit further afield than you would normally go. There you might meet, and make friends with, people who you could perhaps exchange visits with, or indeed share holidays if appropriate.
