Whether you’ve just found out that you’re HIV-positive or you’ve known for years and want to learn more about your treatment options, it’s important to know that fighting HIV is more complicated than treating a cold. Making Decisions About Therapies focuses on issues to consider when developing your plans about when and how you will treat your HIV.
AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) is caused by the virus called HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus). This virus attacks the immune system which usually fights infection. When the immune system breaks down, you lose this protection and can develop other serious “opportunistic infections†or OIs. Day One: After You’ve Tested Positive covers the basics of HIV, how to monitor your health and points to consider in developing long-term strategies for managing HIV.
One of the most important tools that you have in fighting HIV disease is your relationship with your doctor. Our publication, Building a Cooperative Doctor / Patient Relationship presents things to think about when finding a doctor to treat HIV.
As with other illnesses, HIV disease is not the same in all people. Anti-HIV Therapy Strategies discusses many of the goals, challenges and options available when developing a long-term approach to wisely using anti-HIV drugs. Ultimately the decision of if, when and how to use anti-HIV therapies is up to you. This publication offers food for thought in defining a strategy that you feel good about.
As the immune system breaks down, people with AIDS are more likely to get other infections. These OIs start to take advantage of the body’s weakened defenses. Our Opportunistic Infections Chart covers many of these illnesses and things that can be done to prevent or treat them. PCP, a type of pneumonia, is rare in healthy individuals. It is a leading cause of death in people with AIDS. The methods to prevent this infection are discussed in PCP Prevention.
The “intro packet†also includes a Guide to HIV/AIDS Related Resources. This guide can be used as a starting point for finding information that might not be available through Project Inform or serves to supplement what we can offer.
In addition to the material provided in our Introductory Packet, Project Inform also has information on many other aspects of HIV.
In order for you and your doctor to know how to fight your HIV infection, you need to have blood tests done regularly. These help you closely monitor your health and any possible damage from HIV or the drugs you’re taking. Our publication Blood Work: A Useful Tool for Monitoring HIV discusses many of the tests your doctor will use and will help you to read and understand the report he or she gets from the lab. HIV Drug Resistance Tests explains tests that can be used to help guide you in determining which anti-HIV medications could be most effective for you. We have developed some Personal Tracking Charts (PDF only) as a tool for you to help you keep trackof your own health. They can also help you keep a history of your medications, or to jot down notes of things you might want to discuss with your doctor at your next appointment.
When HIV causes a woman’s immune system to weaken, she can become susceptible to certain infections, notably gynecological conditions. Publications such as GYN Conditions can help shed light on issues of concern to women living with HIV. More information can be found here.
Drugs used to treat HIV are in development every day. We’re still learning about the medications currently available. While the short-term side effects of treatments are generally well known when a drug is approved (see Dealing with Drug Side Effects), possible long-term side effects are still being studied. Some of these include Bone Problems, Lipodystrophy and Mitochondrial Toxicity. Project Inform also has information about improving your health in ways that may decrease the risk of drug side effects. These include Towards a Healthy Liver and Nutrition and Weight Maintenance.
If you do decide to start treatment, or are considering switching to other treatments, it will be easier if you learn about the medicines you’re going to take. Different medicines have different requirements: some, for example, need to be taken with food while others must be taken on an empty stomach. Each medicine has different side effects. Anti-HIV therapy involves taking several medicines together so you’ll need to consider possible
