have the men of east anglia not worked it out yet.. or is there some strange ritual where they have to try it first before they can be confirmed as "straight"

Just a thought.. it could always mean a bloke who acts very straight, but is kinda 'in the closet' about wanting to try something with another bloke. He classes himself as straight because to come to terms with being 'bi' can be very difficult, so its easier just to try and ignore it in everyday life.
