:Well I would say that if you are driving btw those two cities you should definitely pass through banff and whistler. Vernon is good but its a town town not like banff and whistler where the action is more cosmopolitan.
As a Calgary there are really only 3 cool cities in western canada and they are Victoria on the island, Vancouver, and Calgary.
Edmonton is only good if you really need to see the big shoppinng mall they are famous for.
The little towns in between are great if you like what little towns offer like hot springs etc.
Enjoy your trip Canada is v. beautiful especially during the summer/winter not so much in the transition seasons.
