Just checked my phone bill and noticed I was paying money for my calls. I was a bit surprised, since we get free calls, why would we have a bill.
When I checked the numbers it turned out that the 0845 numbers cost a bloody fortune. Who is 0845.....well recently my council and government agencies have become 0845 i.e. DVLA, benefit, Local Authority, etc. So on a local number I could get a free phone call to them..........now it costs me to call down the road.
What is going on? Is there a con where these agencies get money back if they change to 0845 numbers instead of staying with local numbers?

I'm pretty sure BT have just announced that they are going to scrap charges for 0845/0844 numbers for people on certain price plans. If I find a link I will post it.

Edited to include link.
I thought 0845 was local rate?

They are local call rate. But if you have a contract that gives free national calls, then you will find 0845 numbers are excluded and you have to pay for the calls

This one drives me nuts. Our price plan has a fixed sum for any call in the UK so long as the call does not exceed 1 hour. However this does not apply to non geographical numbers such as 0870 & 0845, we get charged the full paluka. As invariably it is to a call centre and you just know you are going to have to survive 20 minutes of someones idea of music, paying for the privilege does not fill me with enthusiasm. However all of those numbers have to be linked to a geographical number. You can look up the underlying number from this website, call it instead of the 0870, job done!
