I have got a trapped nerve in my neck (the sorest thing ever) and was wondering if anyone had ever had acupunture for anything like this before and if it atucally worked. I have a football Trial in the morning for a new club and need to attend.
Tracy has booked me into a nearby clinic tonight and tomorrow morning to see if it will do anything for me.....
Anyone got any other helpful tips? Im in complete agony!!!!

Yours hasn't gone away either? :therethere:
I've had cupping and acupuncture for a severe back pain and also for loosening tightened back muscles through over training - they all worked and pretty quickly. I could hardly walk in with the back pain, but 40 minutes later I was pretty much ok.
You should be fine.

I use to have an hour of that every week and can't reccommend it highly enough! I had it because of digestive problems and I have to admit it worked.
Glad your pain is easing!

Dave
I have a recurring trapped nerve in my neck. Never tried accupuncture - but heard great reports for that and other conditions.I had massage to loosen the stiff muscles caused by the pain., and traction to open the gap up a bit and relieve the pressure on the nerve itself. Worked a treat.
If you want to help yourself in the meantime, I strongly recommend taking max pain relief, standing under a hot shower directed at the neck itself, not the pain if it is in your arm or shoulder (which is misdirected pain from the nerve in your neck) and gently rotating your shoulders. Don't roll your head around it will just make it worse.
Imagine you have a felt tip pen poking horizontally out of your shoulders (wierd I know but bear with me) and try to draw little and then bigger circles with them. Keep your head in the correct posture without lifting your shoulders against the pain will help too. Trust me it will help while you get more permanent treatment.
Also watch out, don't hunch or go rigid just cos it hurts, keep best posture and relaxed shoulders all the time.
Hope it gets better soon, I went undiagniosed for 7 weeks and was in agony.
once we are both awake, me n den will give u some advice and clear up some of everyones misconceptions....

don'tell us that!!! we're both physios!!!!
I just wonder how quickly your back pain will return, and how much you'll end up forking out for chiropractor treatment in the long run!!!! quick fixes are never usually advisable - only tend to work in the short term!!!!........................
we'll get back to you all on this one............
hiya maz and den ...... I wasnt criticising the physio in any way ... i was saying that his treatment didnt work for me ...whereas the chiropractor def did .. be it a "quick fix" or not i am much happier being a relatively almost normal pain free active 47yr old rather than having my basic everyday activities being akin to that of a disabled 80yr old  (no disrespect to 80yr olds redface ) ... I have neurogenic stenosis and attended the senior therapist in my local hospital for 3 months ... i am a staff nurse and understand totally that health is all about the 'holistic approach" ... i cant see why both physios and chirpractors cant work in tandem with each other.... the physio was telling me to flex and was giving me traction, which seemed to make things worse ... whereas my chirpractor suggested i crouch / bend forward to release the spinal tract which traps my nerves there ... and i use an ice pack at the firstt niggle ... it works wonders ... i know in the long term i will always have a problem ... and that it can flare up ..... but at least i know how to handle it now ... i can walk about the town and shops and socialise with friends ... whereas for 3months + i struggled immensely ....pain only now on standing for long periods .. but still working on strengthening my back muscles ... your field more than mine so obviously i welcome any other comments from you both .. thanks xx cool xx OOPS PS ... GOOD LUCK DAVID ... GLAD U GOT SORTED EVENTUALLY X biggrin
Well as I've mentioned I've had both Acupuncture and Shiatsu but I wouldn't ever recommend getting a 'Shiatsu' massage from somebody who wasn't both trained and qualified. Especially if you have an injury as it could make it worse in the long run or even do further damage.
Trained therapists should carry out therapy.

Well this is an interesting debate but isnt the underlying message something like do what works for you and dont be afraid to try something else if your getting nowhere ?
Having seen the difference that its made to igrin ( and also in the past to me I would attest to the skills of the chiropractic profession ) but each to thier own

No i definately agree with you there, exactly - obviously not getting there with one physio, and chiropractor can be great - and that is fantastic at the moment for you as you are now able to go about your daily activities, but those kind of treatments are only aimed at short term relief and won't be sorting the underlying reason of why you have back pain.
That means that you will probably always have flare ups and have to get the ice on and do the crouching technique.... great that it works, but wouldn't it be even better to not have a flare up, and take some time really sorting things? muscle strengthening is usually excellent, whatever the reason for back pain....(being cautious here as don't know anything about yours) and the majority of evidence points down this route of treatment!
When D gets his arse in gear he'll tell you !!lol
lol cool Maz ... waiting with breath held ........................................ OMG turning BLUE!!! ....ok lets hear it for Den ..... oops i mean FROM Den .. as i say its your field and you have the indepth knowledge that i obviously dont ... wink but you are so right ... we do have an interesting little debate brewing here ........ pros and cons of chiropractice .... as GF2 says ,,,, what works for one may not work for another so go with what works for the individual ... tthe only comparison i can make towards that point is that as a trained nurse i know that some particular drugs work wonders for some patients and yet are hell on earth for others .... damn i wont be on til late tonight coz i have a wee date... but hope to catch up with u soon ... take care Maz xx biggrin

I know! We actually had a debate at uni and an assignment based on that question - chiropractor vs physio and discussion on alternative therapies etc - was v good, sparked up loads and went on for practically the whole year....
Anyway, enjoy your wee date and be sure to tell us all about it, D won;t be on till later anyway so you won't miss anything!!!

Golden message is to find out what caused the trapped nerve!
Many people who get a trapped nerve have bad posture or jobs where they sit badly, the work is repetetive or undertake sedentary activities for long periods (like driving and watching tv). Another group is those doing something physical that 'puts something out' and the swollen or displaced tissues therefore trap a nerve. Rarely the cause is congenital/ developmental but a doctor is the only one that might find that out? Only visiting someone who has got the experience to find out the cause is going to fix it for you. Who have you tried so far? Ultimately a scan is what you want but can be hard to get unless you are Rooney or Beckham!
Anything else is only temporary relief as you may be repeating the cause every day regardless of how fit and young you are and avoiding it only produces worse problems later on in my experience.

Are you a physio too?!?!?!?!?!....................
Well said, I'm sure dens would have gone somewhere along those lines!!! biggrin
Acupuncture is a good way to control pain, but it will not a 'cure' anything. Never think it will.
Always remember

its of course natural that the cause of any pain is investigated ....and the cause identified .... in my case my pelvis hadnt clicked back into place after childbirth ...14 yrs ago ... and apart from one short episode of back pain a couple of months after the birth i was totally unaware of this ...... thro the yrs i had the odd niggle here and there but nothing worth investigating ... only when my working environment changed a couple of yrs ago and i spend the majority of the day on my feet for long periods of time did the pain build up and eventually was treated by physio but not investigated with scans .....my pain apparently wasnt in the 'criteria' to qualify for either a CT or an MRI scan............... it wasnt diagnosed 'til i went to the chiropractor .. .. whats one to do ??... hmmm confused

Sorry, should have read this thread better!
Second point I would like to make about this is that identifying the problem often needs visits to several people. With a similar problem I went to GP first and then several alternative practitioners and back to a GP and then a phsyiologist as I really had two problems - one masking the other. The point though was that none of these practiotioners were crap it is just really hard to find a cause for pain (which might not even arise from the area that appears to hurt).
As you go to different people it is really important that you find people recommended if you step out of the NHS route and if it is not their area of expertise they should be professional enough not to treat you and tell you so. A few practitioners are only too happy to take your money and temporarily relieve you of the problem but not willing to to admit that they are not curing you.
Like any problem giving it some attention makes it feel better but curing it or at least being able to self manage the problem is much better.
I am not knocking the complimentary / alternative medicine routes I've used them my self to good effect, I'd rather not see a debate about who is better than who it's horses for courses.
Oh and I have a vested interest to declare - I have friends in the trade so to speak!
Hope you get an answer soon as these things can take a while to sort out.
