Ladies ( or gents )
Ive been invited to a ball in the officers mess in a few weeks time. (if you can call it an invitation.........typical man, his exact words were, have you got a ball gown?)
Like good old Calamityjane, i just aint accustomed to purchasing such delicate items of female finery, and I havent got a clue as to what i should wear.
I realy fancy a black, off the shoulder, knee length dress with a full skirt.
Please tell me where im going wrong, cos im sure its just so NOT the thing to wear.
Does it have to be black, is knee length too short and should one expose ones shoulders?
Sounds ok to me... just about right I would think!
Deesnt have to be black, kneelength is fine and so are bare shoulders. Can also get a nice shawl to cover them?
Have fun x

I don't know about now but it used to be long dresses. Off the shoulder is fine, any color is fine. But is was expected to be floor length or about that.
Do you know any of the other partners? Or ask him to ask some of his friends what their partners are wearing or to give you a call.
If you can talk to someone about what other ladies will be wearing would be your best option. But if not any colour is fine, but I would say full length would be better if it's a formal ball.
I used to be an Officers Mess Bar manager and I have seen ladies sent home at the door for not wearing a floor length dress.
It kind of depends on the Regiment, some are more formal than others so it's worth checking exactly what the dress code is. Apart from that there never seemed to be any problem with how much cleavage was showing which was great for me serving the wine!

From what i can remember, if the boys are in dress uniform the laydee's are expected to be in full length.
Bare shoulders are fine and colour is always more fun than black. Sleek and draped seems to be more popular at the moment than proper 'ball dress' style.
My favourite trick is to spend an afternoon window shopping and trying stuff on to get an idea of what suits me & what size is best and then look on ebay.
Am jealous now - I want a posh frock!

Full length is a must for protocol and becasue it's such a great occasion to go the whole hog. Sleek is more in than meringue style. I agree go colour, black is a trifle boring I feel.
A good tip, look into hiring, you get a good choice and many good hire shops will be honest about what suits you and doesn't. Expect to pay £40 upwards.

I've seen some stunning posh frocks in TK Maxx at silly prices when they're on sale- I keep looking for an excuse to buy one, saw a lovely one the other day for around £20!
I occasionally accompany a male friend to posh do's like this.
As I have a very large tattoo on my back, I can't wear a backless dress, as a lot of higher ranking officers don't like tats on women. So maybe keep them covered.
And so far all of mine have been floor length, mainly because I hate my legs. But I saw one woman wearing a mid calf length dress, and getting some very disgusted looks from certain ranks. Although they had no problem with her cleavage!!!
Im lucky in that i have legs, cleavage and no tats, but take your point re how much flesh is on show, so i better ask his advice as its his party and it simply wouldnt do to show him up..........if i go
