who has the administrator priveledges on the pc?
xx fem xx
Hiya,
Microsofts own support site,
Has lots of info and instructions on resetting forgotton passwords.
My advice is to set up a seperate admin account on any PC that kids use, never give them admin privilidges, a lot of the sites they use are full of nasties, piggy backed spyware, viruses and other stuff you dont want. Limited accounts allow them to access the internet and the such, but doesnt allow access to install programmes and the like. password the admin account, but dont forget it! If she needs programmes installed etc, you can do this and then allow her access.
Hope this helps,

I presume it's not caps lock left on or a dodgy keyboard.
Try Googling 'lost password xp' for a lot of info.
I've got it :smug:
Have you plugged the keyboard in? and is the big thingie that makes the noise (normally under the desk) switched on?

next to where your type your password click on the ? next to the green square with the white arrow ...the hint word should then be revealed.
Righty ho,
Lets be clear what the problem is,
Can you log into windows on her account, or is it the actual windows password that isnt working?
Can you log into any account on windows on that computer?
If you cant it might well be worth booting windows into safe mode and have a look what you can change with that, to do this restart the PC, when it has done the memory check, but before the windows XP load screen appears tap F8 for a few seconds, it should boot into a menu, select 'start windows in safe mode' this will load a clean system without any user preference being applied, no passwords, no wallpaper etc, it will look funny but dont worry, its normal. See if you can change the settings in the user accounts this way or if not, use it to set up another account with admin privilidges. Shut down windows in the normal way and restart without pressing F8, you should have another admin account you can then use to sort it out.
If you can it will be far easier to just make another account for her, all of the software on the Pc should be available to the new account.

this is to change administrator password, other than that cant help sorry.
Do you have the XP install disc if so you install over the top and it does not change any of your settings?
Ok,
So you can actually get into windows, thats a start
Sounds like possibly windows has been permanantely set to boot into safe mode.
Make sure there is no floppy disc or CD's in any of the drives.
Use the same F8 trick and select 'start windows using last known good configuration' or whatever it says to that effect.
See if that works.
More info here.....
If its booting in safe mode, nothing that requires a password will work if i remember rightly, because it doesnt load any user preference file.

OK... I'm working from memory here so this might be a little off....
If the PC has XP Pro you might be able to get in by doing the following:
1) Start the PC
2) At the normal logon screen press CTRL+ALT+DELETE together twice. That should take you out of the graphical logon into the basic windows logon screen.
3) Change the user name to administrator, leave the password blank and click the logon button.
This will probably only work with XP Pro and if the admin password hasn't been set. If you get in you should be able to follow the MS links above to change the passwords.
Good luck!
I have another idea :smug:
Are you insured? :rascal:
