OK, I admit it's not going to be easy. It does take some techy knowledge and a bit of patience.
the direct link UK to the software is
This is an ISO image, so you have to use the "burn from image" option with your CD burning software.
Once you have burnt the CD, you need to make sure that the first boot option on the doddgy PC is "boot from CD".
Then, just drop the CD in the drive and turn on. The software sets itself up (although it does have some difficulty with non std mice) and you will have a window type setup like Windows/Mac.
It has a programme like "File Manager" that you can use to drag and drop onto a floppy or USB stick or a spare HD or partition (that you are not going to format when you reinstall windows).
II would like to add that you need a CD burner and burning software such as Nero.
An alternative and slightly more techy approach would be to take out the hard drive and connect it to another PC, then run antivirus software on both.
If you're being thrown out onto the command prompt when doing system repair from a boot up CD, type E: if you're CD drive letter is E, then setup and windows should start up again. If you upgrade windows on Steve's computer to XP then you should be able to go through the whole thing without having to see the command prompt.
It is slightly possible the virus has affected the boot sector of your hard drive, in which case you'll need a program which will repair the boot sector of your hard drive. I'm not entirely sure, but I think you need to find out the make and model number so you know which one will work.
Wouldn't think it would go that far, but hey, you know something new if it goes wrong again
