And don't even get me started on the '8 Items or less' sign! I am sure they do it to on purpose!

Screwtape, don't worry about it, it's still a healthy debate with good (albeit differing) opinions and not getting nasty. BUT I have to say re-reading your post above, there are two phrases that do sound quite harsh and may well have come across to many as belittling some people. It didn't read to me as a light hearted banter thread nor did it appear to be only linked to the 'moron' post but a more generic feel.

Now I agree that - Davies's - doesn't look right because of the double s, but how about - Dreyfus's - that doesn't look right either but when you say the name you do pronounce the extra 's', does this effect the rule?

The correct froms are; 'Davies owns' and 'Dreyfus owns'.
Owns being the 3rd person present singular to denote ownership.

Back to subject, English is used across the globe, we need rules to enable us all to understand 'English'. We do not need to follow every rule to be understood most of the time. We only need to look across the pond to see they can not spell, but we understand them, even if they do misuse words like pants!
Given that I can not spell, I forgive them.
