De Sade,
While you said what you said at absolutely the wrong moment (having been surrounded for days) I admit readily that you didn't deserve to be spoken to so harshly by me. (Some of the others got off lightly.) I respect the fact you sent me a PM and I see you never meant any harm. I apologise and I have no problem doing so in a manner as public as my previous words.
Richard

Screwtape, not only have you (albeit unintentionally) initiated imho one of the most interesting threads this year, you have also shown yourself to be a gentleman.
i look forward to your next thread!
ps - and so cute! :giggle:

Near the beginning of this thread I posted the url and was disappointed no one picked up on it. There was a similar backlash to this book when it was first published, I recall many a Amazon reviewer slating Lynne Truss' work. One must bear in mind of course that an author's motives are in part financial. BTW I have not read this book.
One reviewer pointed out that her book's cover actually had a grammatical error; the sub title: 'The Zero Tolerance Approach to Punctuation" and should have been 'Zero-Tolerance'.
But thanks to Screwtape's thread I invented the game 'ShagLit' :smug: which I hope will make me millions for years to come. Just have to work out the rules of play before it is ready to go into production.

I picked up on it, but then carried on reading the thread and forgot about it redface lol
I haven't read it either, apart from the first 5 lines or so of my soon-to-be-stepmum's copy (can anyone tell me whether I punctuated that correctly? dunno :lolsmile The words that came from my mouth were "I need this book!!"
I think it would be amusing reading for an awful lot of the posters on this thread, and I will buy it for myself soon biggrin

ok children, lesson over its time for math. now who can tell me how many beans make five?

How many beans make five what? biggrin
Cups of coffee? dunno
About 150 good coffee beans, but only from the upper slops, make five cups.
In many cases when I see 'whilst' used in a sentence I feel I would have used 'while'.
Can anyone explain the diference between 'whilst' and 'while'?
EDIT just looked up 'Conjunctive Adverbs'. I think I need to take an elementary English grammar course.

I can'twait Richard :rascal:
'Whilst' is older and 'while' is newer and used mostly instead of the former in America. Otherwise there is no difference.

PS Eats, Shoots and Leaves was a very witty and informative book, I thought. It is very revealing that dumbing down barely rates a mention but its opposite (whatever that is) gets howls of disapproval.

Did you know you can now buy "a piece of nothing"
Nothing comes from nothing,
nothing ever could,
But somewhere in my youth, or childhood,
I must have done something good.

All creation was preceded by Nothing.
"Nothing", therefore, is the substance
From which all things come,
And to which they shall return.
That infinite Nothing gave rise to nature.
Nature's perfect symmetry is instinctive.
Whatever upsets that balance can be said to be wrong.
We are all part of nature.
As such, that instinct is part of us.
To contribute to the balance of all things,
Is to live in harmony with one's self.
To move against the effortless flow,
Is to cause disruption to our surroundings,
And so to us.
Richard

Nature is the rule of chaos. Any balance is no more that accident.
Carbon is available, it is turned into plant matter, and plants grow. We use the plants, making carbon-dioxide. Plants grow, but now not fast enough.
Balance is an accident of chaos. One more accident, man made or not, will tip earth into another balance. That balance may not include us.
