It's an ebb and flow - rip tide and spring tide. Some go, some stay and some float gently down the water.
It's all interesting though - new people are welcome all of the time, it's how they interact with the others which is interesting and informative. Some are confrontational and argumentative from the start; some are enquiring and interested, some don't want to be told by others what's gone on before, some aren't interested in anything other than their own immediate world and others are kind, caring, funny, interested, helpful and informative.
Great Big Onion time!! confused :?
PS in edit - didn't mean to leave out the prats, twats and sprats without whom life would be so much duller! lol

Ice, I have to agree with all that you have said here.
My other point is this, this site has worked very successful for as long as I have been here and apparently for a long time before I came here too. I have said this before.."Why change success?" The formula for success has been found and in my opinion it is the jewel on the web. There is always some one who wants to change something for the sake of change. I say to those people leave well alone. Change it only if you have a more successful formula. If you do indeed have a more successful formula then go and build a web site. The site is working well the number of people joining it is testament to that. People will always come and go in all walks of life including web sites, chat rooms, workplaces, social clubs etc. So SH will be no different. If it ain't broke don't fix it. It must have worked well for the established members or they would have left. It must be working well for the majority of people or it would have folded, it works well for people who have just joined or they would not have joined and stayed. In short it works well and it is successful. It wont work well for everyone because that is life so for those that it isn't working for .....the door is that way. Don't get me wrong, I am all for advancement through technology but only when and if there is a need. I don't think there is a need to change a damn thing.

I'm relatively new to this site compared to a lot of others.
I found it a little intimidating at first what with all the cliques etc - obviously some people are going to get on with others and some arn't but it is a little off putting when none of the regulars answer threads or they stick to their own threads.
This isn't a dig at anyone - it's just the way I saw things when I first started out.
I still feel a little like a newcomer and that I have to "prove" myself and my worth when starting threads which is why I don't tend to start many - I always worry that something has been said before or it won't appeal to anyone. When I do start a thread, a lot of thought goes into it but I much prefer to join in with already established topics or just watch from the sidelines - it's safer that way!.

I have probably only started around five threads or so. There are so many anyway it seems superfluous to start another. It takes enough time to get through them as it is and I am content to contribute to them as there is so much going on that interests me.
I don't think there is any real merit in starting posts for the sake of it as some people seem to do. It dosen't make you a more commited member of SH if you do post a lot. It dosen't mean you are a less commited member if you don't post a lot.
I am aware that some members are aware that certain topics have been covered before. Well, so what! New people join, things move on. Perhaps it's good that subjects are revisited and re-examined or new perspectives are added. It's what a forum should be, something that is alive and vital, not static.

What he said.
OMFG i am sooo gonna hate meself in the morning . . . . . but a brief synopsis of this entire thread, to my mind, would be . . . . . . .
The standard of posting lately has dropped, and has been noticed by quite a few people
Yes, lots of threads are downright STUPID, some are downright FUNNY and some are downright AWFUL Have a read of the old threads which really need revived so you can see just how awful and stupid the threads have become recently.
Maybe it's worth thinking about why lots and lots of regulars AREN'T posting?
There's a search engine so, if for instance, someone new thinks, 'I know, I bet they've never discussed shaving on here' It just might be worth checking it through the search function and note that it has been done to death in recent history.
just a bit of thought to go into the original thread.
I must admit that I have spent hours and hours reading through old threads (some are just so damn funny) but I do like to see new ones started even if on similar subjects. Main reason is because some of the older threads had become so long, some of those who contributed no longer post and its good to see new thoughts on old subjects.
When I was new I started far too many threads in far too short a space of time and I think all new people do but after a while they can see that the responses get less and less . Never really thought about how good or bad they were but now I am very much more selective before I hit the keyboard now and often cant really see ones I can contribute too so I dont.
A mix is what is needed for everyone, a few games that everyone can join in on and some serious posts where people can air their views/ask questions. The cafe would be a boring place if all we did was the latter!
I'm going to wrap this up now before it turns into a whinge of my own. Let me just conclude by saying that if anyone feels the content of discussions is of a poorer quality than they require, then it is up to those people to put finger to keyboard and do something about it, because this site is what YOU make it, and nobody else has a responsibility to cater to your tastes.
As to the point in question, some of the threads are bollocks, this is true, and they drop rapidly off the bottom of the page. Could people think a little more before they start a thread, wouldn't hurt, so point well made (See the posting guidelines, they say the same thing, including running a quick search for old threads)

Many of us that don't fall into the self-obsessed attention seeker category are quite happy for the conversation to be led by others and contribute when we think we have something to add, be it wise, witty, or just killing time.

So if you start your own thread that means your self-obsessed and attention seeking dunno
I agree with the fact that some days you have an idea so start a topic off and others you just in the mood for replying.
At the end of the day this is an open forum and with that many opinionated people in the same place there are gonna be disagreements of course, and this thread is one fo them.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion and of course to voice it here, which i think is a good thing, there are some great debates that go it seems to me that its ok when some people complain about the quality of threads, but not when it someone else who has a winge :dunno:
(Please dont string him up by the balls, theyre very dear to me biggrin )

Did you not expect a response from people? I don't think that others giving their opinion is wrong, even if I don't agree with it! Replies have varied from 'right on' to 'get lost' so that is healthy debate.
As an ordinary member of SH I have to agree with a lot of the sentiment about 'self-obsessed' and 'meaningless threads' but that's just what people want to talk about. I don't have to contribute to a thread unless I choose to. The fact that some threads become conversations between two or three people and seem to exclude others is neither here nor there - hey, we've all done it!
As a Mod - well... I sometimes choose to exclude myself, move on and deal with those on the site who are a menace, abusive or threatening.
We can't just have threads which agree with the initial message and end up, not only self-obsessed, but self- congratulatory. Free speech for all.
None of the above was written with a sharp voice, a scowl or a frown, it's just a viewpoint! :P

It no good putting a synopsis of the entire thread towards the end of it!!! I'd already read the whole thread then i found the synopsis!! Couldnt you have done that on page 1????
 :eeek:
Oooooh, I'd love a good SIN-opsis!!!
Mike.
Neil - very useful summary.
I have just returned from a few days away and I am wasting time on here when I should be working. Could you please write a summary of any thread over 3 pages long and post it at the end of each thread by say 2pm and I will pop back and review them. If you could give each thread a star rating say from One * to Five ***** this would allow me to decide which order to read your summaries in.
Cheers
CQ
Hehe, now I thought Neil was posting a point of his own in bold, made out of the other posts, or was I being too clever confused:
That is the advantage of being Tall (though not necessarily hairy) you see I find most of what neilinleeds says just goes straight over my head rolleyes

"Many" does not mean all. That means some of us who are not self-obsessed do start threads.
A self-obsessed person starting threads does not necessarily equate to a thread starter being self-obsessed.
Put cause before effect instead of the other way round and it'll make sense.
