I have nephews and nieces who are dyxlexic - they are now at Uni (where they recognise their talent and not just look at the spellings).
People with dyslexia can be misunderstood greatly - even now.
We should all take time not to pick fault with people's ability to spell but rather look deeper into the meaning of the posts.

Can I firstly say that it takes a huge amount of guts to say what you have just said and the fact that you can now laugh about it is proof that you have moved on and realised that they were wrong when they said you were stupid.... So passionkiss

My sister was also a victim of the "you are stupid" era and it did affect her alot for many years... She now has her own Limited company and is very very successful... So yah boo sucks flipa

to the pratts who said she was stupid...
Now I move on to the present times and talk about my eldest daughter who is 15... She lives with my parents in Coventry as the schools are far better there than in Wolverhampton... This is because she also has dyslexia.... She has gone through the teasing and the cruel taunts that children with difficulties get, but as time has passed she has gained a confidence to overcome this. She was "Statemented" (which basically means that she was recognised by the state as requiring additional one-on-one help) in her last year at middle school and because of that has progressed at a fantastic rate and we are very proud to say that she has recently been de-statemented....
Like yourself Debs she is very talented artistically and produces some amazing work.... This is very common with people that have dyslexia which dispells the theory that they are infact thick...
She still isn't the best speller in the world and has her own sort of language but it improves all the time especially with the use of MSN. But as it has been proved you dont always have to spell a word as the dictionary says it should for you to be understood....
Your personality shines and I look forward to the day when I can spot you across a room and scream at the top of my voice "Oh my god it's Debbiewebs" lol

Someone I used to work with was dyslexic. He had a degree and had been a teacher.
You have proved that the people who doubted you were wrong. I wish I had your gift for artistry and your sense of humour. You are so open and honest and I always enjoy reading your posts.

Hi Debbiewebs, I admire you a lot for your participation in this forum. and it's a good idea for a future munch. I studied at university as a mature student in the 1990s and there were several students in my group who were dyslexic, and they received a lot of help and extra time in exams. Happily things are improving for people with dyslexia.
Drifter, your avatar looks extraordinarily like Ian Hislop - are you sure you're not him? I admire you for managing to afford to spend time in here as well as appearing on TV and editing Private Eye!

I no it will stay for me for the rest of me life the torment i got from school..the bulling and the mental tourcher!........i had to bear!
but in a way it made me stronger!.............being in this cafe!...........has been such a confidence builder for me!......i thank you all! kiss

I am mildly dyslexic and I know of at least one other forum member who is too
But when you look at it some of the most successfull people in the country are dyslexic

Yes I am Dyslexic and I am not ashamed or embarrased to say that.
Ok i cant communicate on paper , poperly , by orthodox standards, but Dyslexia is a gift, it allows you to think latteraly to not be constrained by rules.
I have a degree and own businees so it has never held me back.
Of course life would have been easier had the condition been discovered earlier.
Whilst not wishing to decry anones efforts to support a registered dyslexia charity, i do question a society the makes dyslexics rely on charity. It is a disability just like any physical disability.
BTW an agaram of dyslexia is daily sex!!!

I was told I had dyslexia at school but I think for me it was a very minor thing and probably had something to do with the fact that I write left handed and do everything else right handed.
At least it meant I was able have fun at the same time as doing my homework!

Its great to find others like me self!.......i do believe there are different stages of dyslexia!
i have to admit i am one of the lucky ones!..that over the years have made lots of progress with me reading and spelling!
But for others that have server dylaxcer well thats another story!...like in any disabilities there are different degrees!
I have a great friend who is diyllacix!....and we have great fun trying are spellings out with each other!.........but for him sadly he really lacks the confidence in him self to ever progress in a carer!
It would be nice not have charities and all disability be supported by the state!

My best friends brother has severe dyslexia - he owns hiw own business designing websites!
i'm not dyslexic, in fact english was my best subject at school, but i have trouble finding my way round a website, never mind actually building one!!!

Have you ever tried using coloured overlays??... My daughter has an amber/orangy coloured one and it helps her to focus on the words.... I think that it depends on the person as to what colour works for them but worth a go....
All these posts just go to prove that confidence if the key factor in what you are able to achieve.... Self belief and to be honest that works for everyone not just people with dyslexia...

and 2 years later...just been reminded by someone...on MSN or get your mates to post in your best reading colour (often blue) and it helps a lot to keep up in a similar way to the coloured overlays
and look at that I even searched for it first!

hats of to you Debs, 2 of my step kids ( well ex step kids now I spose ) are dyslexic, and yes they do get shit slung at them because they are thick, yet give X a engine, he can make it growl or purrr even if you give him in peices
