Watched a documentary about Roy Chubby Brown last night, which was really interesting. The interviewer spent a month with him both at his shows and at home with him and his family.
Roy clearly sees a marked difference between his on stage person and his real self, but the interviewer didnt see the demarcation between the two personas, and thought that Brown was maybe racist/sexist/insert any ist, in real life.
What brought the interviewer to this conclusion, was an incident when Roy was at the gym and he made a comment to a couple of his mates about asylum seekers needing to conform to our rules and laws and traditions if they wanted the right to live in this country (this was after his mate showed him a newspaper headline about kids at a school not allowed to bring/receive presents in case it offended anyone who didnt celebrate christmas)
The interviewer was very put out by these comments and deduced that the line between the satge chubby brown and the reall one was becoming very blurred indeed.
Are most of us not guilty of laughing about a texted or emailed joke about the current newsworthy items...Ive lost count of the number of Gary Glitter jokes that have flooded into my phone and inbox this week, and similarly over the years, have had jokes about the austrian cellar children, michael jackson, gays, lesbians, women, english, irish, scottish, all races, blondes, nuns.....i could go on and on.
Is bad taste humour acceptable in todays overly PC society, is it acceptable to laugh and pass on those jokes you find funny, or is it something you wouldnt dream of?
Why do I laugh at Chubby Brown, yet I found Bernard Manning hugely offensive? dunno
Do you hold your hands up to laughing at bad taste jokes, or do you keep quiet, lest you should be seen as a bigot?
just some musings that have been pottering round my head since last night.....what say you lot??
I laugh at anything I find funny....
Some of the most racialy(sp) offensive jokes you could wish to hear/read I receive from a black/coloured/afro carribean guy....
i always find RCB very funny even his racial jokes but after watching that documentary i really lost interest of his stuff,i used to think it was just a stage act...
yes i laugh at what is probably considered un-pc jokes, its life.
As for 'chubby brown' i have met him a a cpl o times within my line of work n i can honestly say he is nothing like his on stage persona he's a really down to earth normal type o guy
Anyone who knows me, knows I don't like the kind of black humour texts which circulate after any incident and they won't send them to me. I find Brown (and also Manning) very offensive. I don't care whether or not it's an act, I just don't like it. It's not just the 'ist' jokes, I don't like the excessive swearing either. I don't consider myself a prude or particularly PC; I just find that kind of humour tasteless.
We watched the RCB programme ... again I found the lines blurred but with his reputation I'm hardly surprised.
What I did find odd was his reaction to the hecklers! I completely understand what he and his wife were saying and do agree however, what does he expect, over the years he has garnered a reputation for bad language, picking on people in the crowd etc. In that respect he can only blame himself for setting the precedent!
With bad taste humour it does depend whether I find it funny or not as to the subject matter.
I laugh at anything that is funny.
Some of us in certain lines of work, use black humour to get through life. This is usually offensive, tasteless, crude, and politically incorrect. It is usually always very funny too....
Sometimes I look at the state of this country, and feel that even bad taste jokes can raise a smile. Sometimes it is a case of laugh or cry, and I know what I would rather do.
I love bad taste and black humour. Mine was honed during my 10 years as a paramedic. My non-PC humour is no doubt as a result of being a child of the 70s but not having been caught up in the ground swell of 90s whiplash effect.
Black humour has been with us since people could speak. We have always laughed at ourselves, it's only in recent decades that it was deemed offensive to laugh at others. well fuck that, I laugh at others quite guilt free, I laugh at stereotypes though. I rarely laugh at individuals (unless of course they thoroughly deserve it,e.g. Gary Glitter).
So let the laughing commence, someone somewhere will always be offended by anything anyone says. Some do it because they feel guilty, some do it because their very being is to be offended, they love it. Some do it because they are genuinely offended, but some do it because they believe it is incumbent on them. So do it because they like to put on a facade whereas inside they a giggling like a loon.
The upshot is, if it's funny then laugh or take the piss. If it isn't then don't. Personally I prefer to laugh rather than not laugh.
Expect me to come out with bad taste comments on a frequent basis, if you are offended, then tough, get over it. The world will keep turning.
There was a thread quite a while ago about Gallows Humour....
I wonder if anyone who is friendly with the search button could find it :-)
i'm affraid i can't find the gary glitter jokes funny to laugh at them is to laugh at all victims of peadophiles in my mind sorry but uts just how i feel any joke thatlaughs at victims of crimes is wrong and not a fan of blatantly "ist" jokes either maybe i'm over sensitive to things i don't know but i would not of considered myself to b overly PC just aware of others feeling i hope
i also saw the RCB prog a while back i believe it was a repeat last nighti don't think he blurs into one persona just because of the opinion he expressed he just expressed an oppionion held by many it does not make us any kind of "ist" just makes us fed up with our own traditions being stamped out for fear off offending people that most likely wouldn't of felt any offence in the first place now that is the world of PC going crazy

have no memory of any jokes bein made although i'm certain mr b would of he has fabulously dark sense of humour but i would of never heard it for my giggling rotflmao

That'll be Red then rolleyes
There's a lot of gallows humour in my line of work but it's not because we don't have any repsect for people ( whatever colour/creed/etc they may be ) but it's a way of coping with everyday work. Nurses are well known for their strange sense of humour confused
As Bernard Manning had a lot to do with hospital charities in and around North Manchester it was my pleasure to meet him several times. The person I met was a gentleman with a heart of gold. Admittedly he did have some mildly racist beliefs but as a result of his upbringing and the era he was educated. That said, the worst he ever did with regard to his racism was crack jokes. he wouldn't have dreamed of actually doing anything substantial. I have personally seen him be generous to a fault with both Asian and Black people.
Just thought I'd defend the old fart, as a lot of people had good reason to thank him over the years.
I can't abide Roy C Brown, nor could I abide Bernard Manning.
I have a very dry sense of humour but I cannot laugh at derogatory humour.
For me it has to be situational humour, Peter Kay has it spot on in my opinion!
