If Virgin had their act together, they could trace the phone by using it's IMEI number and tell the police fairly accurately where it is next time it's used. Sadly, I don't think Virgin do have thier act together.

the problem with mobile phones is...ermmm...well they mobile wink
Well yes, but if they're turned on with a SIM card in them then they're communicating with at least one cell, often two or three. The technology used can give an indication of the signal strength (so it knows when to change cells as you move around) which tells you roughly how far the 'phone is from the cell it's communicating with. If you've got data from two or three cells then finding the 'phone is a simple matter of drawing a few circles on a map and seeing where they intersect.

I'm getting the distinct impression here that you are not a great fan of the Virgin network blue :P . Virgins and I have never been great bedfellows, mainly due to the fact that I have never knowingly met one in a intimate way wink .
Judy

I shagged a virgin once..... not the phone, obviously... or the cola, or the train, or the airline lol
Nah, nothing against virgin mobiles really.... just that when I've ever rung one, I've never got through without having to go.... "yer what.... yer what........... I can't 'ear ya"

Actually I've had one for several years now and whilst occasionally the signal's not great, most of the time it seems to work for me. I suspect part of the problem is the crappy 'phones that they sell at the cheaper end of the spectrum - my first one had terrible reception, but when I bit the bullet and paid out for a Nokia I stopped having anything like so many problems.
all virgin mobile do is piggy back the T-mobile network......
actually that says it all...... anyway if it was done ont t'internet...wouldn't they have an address for where it was sent, and a signee for it???unless they are silly enough to send a phone thru the normal 1st class post......
therefore they could then be done for handling stolen goods.....
and i am sure they would just zap the imei on the phone and blacklist it.....

I guess it depends where you live as well. My friend (yes, I do have them wink ) used to have a Virgin and it was shite..... then he got three-pay - say no more....
Mind you, I'm on 02 and I can only just get a signal in my house, I have to stand outside and shout  .... I think that's on account of the crap handset though confused
Judy - so that will be zero then rolleyes

Don't forget the police wouldn't waste their time getting all high tech to track down a small time thief. Would still be like searching for a needle in a haystack.
The little numptie has either sold it on to some bloke in the pub/market or used the phone for intended nafarious purposes by now anyway. They know the IMEI number gets blocked... but they also know they can sell it on in the intrim... after all it took a month before you even noticed the theft... much easier than knicking phones from the pub.

Noooooooooooo..... I'm not that careless with money! The payment went out on the 25th Aug, so it's only a few days. I actually noticed my balance was low last Wed when I checked my balance via that automated service some banks have. Admittedly, I only followed it up when I got the statement today ----- OK, that's a bit lax of me, but I was busy.... honest confused :? :? I usually check my balance every other day, since my friend was frauded a few months ago.... but I got lazy.... I won't be so lazy in future!

The police might not want to waste much time on it but Virgin mobile have a vested interest in stopping fraud like this as they're the ones that end up out of pocket, so do the bank's anti-fraud people. The mobile network collects and stores the relevant data anyway, which is how come the police are able to access it when they need to. Working out where the phone is can be done by a computer program, and not a very complex one at that. It's not always going to lead you to the fraudster, but if a number of fraudulently obtained phones all appear on the network at the same location then it's a pretty fair bet that that's where your fraudster is living or 'working'. The police tend to take an interest then, if only because it's an easy collar if all they have to do is turn up and arrest somebody.

Thats exactly the same as me.. Mine works superbly everywhere in the UK (including the middle of remote moors and valleys), but not in my house.. I have to leave it near the back door where it sometimes scrapes 1 bar of signal, and when it rings, I have to go and stand in my garden to actually hear and be heard.. All my mobile conversations are thus overheard by all my neighbours lol
