With someone like James Dean I feel it raises the question whether his death cut short a great career, or whether it was the start of his fame ?
With regards to those I think were cut short in their prime:
Politics: JFK
Music: Michael Hutchence
Film: River Phoenix

James Dean... though there is room for debate as to whether it actually was his time in terms of career.

Why weren't you berated for commenting on this rather than reporting it?
Ooohhhh wrong thread - I need the steam room! :giggle:

It's quite rare I am reduced to tears when news of celebs leaving us occurs.
But today I'm making an exception and thank goodness my 4 year old is too young for me to have to explain this to him as he loves him.
RIP Steve.

Oooo eck ! I've been merged with de_sade
Ayrton Senna, the only famous person I cried about when I heard.
R.I.P Steve sad
for me has got to be janis joplin
shame about the croc hunter but im sure he will be happy in heaven biggrin
Robert Louis Stevenson - still a young man with so much to offer the world.
James IV, the first king in history to unite the Scottish people
I've just received my first (not particularly funny) joke email circular about this..it's amazing how quickly things happen with this interweb thing

as to de-sade`s other question about who should have more time....I notice that of the posts so far including de-sade is that a lot of us seem to be stuck in the cult of celebrity.
The most poignant being that of Missy and her cousin, I also agree that no one should outlive their children.

Maybe thats because De-Sade said

It also prompted this question which I offer to you good folks out there... Family members aside, who - if it was within your power to grant it - would you grant a little extra time to see what might have happened, might might have been done, what could have been achieved.

dunno
only pointing out the poignance of her duel
I would love to have seen what the media would have continued to make of Princess Diana to be honest, would she ever have married Dodi etc etc Although she played to the media when it suited and berated it when it didn't I still had some sort of crazy soft spot for her and just wondered what she would have turned out like in old age - Honor Blackman of Barabara Cartland if you know what I mean!
WIth regards to people like Steve Irwin there is always a great deal of risk, its a wonder people like Red Adaire didn't end up the same way. It really is such a shame considering his age and the young family he leaves behind. Steve did a fantastic job of raising environmental awareness straight into the homes of all kinds of people and I know a lot of people will be driven to continue what he started just because of the genuine, affable (and insane) way he came across.
Larger than life character for sure, but equally sure he was never going to collect a pension!!
As to who went too soon, can I nominate Winston Churchill? For all his faults better than all the politicians of today put together.
John & Shel
He was a great promoter of conservation and bringing whacky dangerous TV to us all, will be sadly missed.
How spooky is this :-
In an earlier interview, Steve was asked what this favorite TV prog. was when he was a kid, he said he really liked Thunder Birds, but would always have a soft spot for Stingray
And fancy going swimming without sunscreen on, everyone knows it protects you from harmful rays........
I find text jokes like these very distasteful, especially so soon after his death. I had some about Gary Glitter when he was on trial in Thailand but that dirty old bastard deserves to be the butt of everyone's jokes. These however are just a bit sick for my taste.

mad FFS! :x Is nothing sacred anymore..?

Nope, nothing is sacred - gallows humor is very very big in the circles I belong to.

Two mobile phone jokes in one thread. That's original Jon, and as a site officer (albeit a Chatroom Op) a totally reprehensible act.

Does that mean I'm not entitled to express myself as an individual, seeing as I'm only a chat room Op. (Though I fail to see what that has to do with it, my opinions are mine, regardless of any 'position').
Quote by de_sade
The guy has just been killed FFS and you think it is a joke???

Yes he has, and already the TV company he was making the documentary for has asked pemission to air the footage of his death - are you going to get on to them and complain?
Quote by de_sade
Can we quote your addition to this thread now as an endorsement of we can treat ALL further deaths, here on SH???.

Do what you like mate - how many people are forwarding the multitude of jokes about this and his funeral arrangements at this very minute - go complain to them too.
Quote by de_sade
Sorry, I think your "jokes" are in bad taste.

You're entitled to your opinions.
Quote by de_sade
However, you may have been passed these so-called "quotes" by someone else and you posted them with an honest belief in their genuine source. But if you are so adamant that they are genuine quotes provide a link to them.
De_sade

I don't recall saying I had been, or that they were - mind you, it depends what you mean by genuine source. I got one from my Mum, now I know she is very genuine, else I wouldn't be here....
Get yer head out of your arse and chill out.

a great man taken to soon.
When you watched what he did I will admit I thought he was mad to put himself in some much danger, but he was doing what he believed was right and what needed to be done.
What touched me the most was his friend saying he will be missed because of his work as an enviromentalist, because he was a good friend but also because he was a great father.
How many people get described as a great father these days???
Turn the volume down a bit de_sade ! My hearing aid just blew a fuse ffs ! rolleyes

Sadly, many dead men do.
What is it about death that makes people forget how much of arse the dead person was while he/she was living ?
To be frank these jokes were on our shopfloor this morning we laugh then carry on it just how things are and the next one will be along and this will be forgotten.
I never watched him much but my thoughts were it was just inevitable. Yes he did have a knack for what he did but the odds were aganst him especially under water.

My Dad was and I was lucky to have the chance to tell him while he was still with us. But then, I'm biased biggrin
Unfortunately people don't get to say things like that to other people while they're still here and regret it when they're not.

At least steve irwin died doing something he loved.

OMG noway!!!!!
As for him in person, I don't have a clue as don't 'know' the bloke. But from what I saw and my opinion of him on screen, was a guy with not only a bucket load of charisma, but enthusiasm - such an enthusiasm for what he done, he loved it.
As for what he done, I'm sure that when he was doing all this dangerous stuff - there was a whole team of specialist people right behind the camera, in case anything went wrong.
The TV company wouldn't make a show with absolutely no safety back up.
What he did do IMO, is give people a much better awareness of wildlife, and the respect that should always be shown for it.
Unfortunately, what killed him was utter bad luck rather than stupidity. I'm sure he didn't deliberatly get a lethal stab/sting to the heart - it just went horribly wrong, a stab/sting (or whatever it was). It just hit the wrong spot.
What about other peoples 'stupid stunts'? Surfers for instance, is it the same thing when they get bitten by sharks?
Army training - goes wrong sometimes, horribly wrong??
Driving your car?
There's an element of danger in a lot of things we do - there was an element of danger in what Steve Irwin done, but I'm pretty sure that all he done was done with a lot forethought. dunno
I thought the guy was bluddy ace :lol2:
