I have taken a decision to become (virtually) teetotal. I don't have a problem with alcohol per se, but I am finding it harder to control my sleep patterns and I am attributing most of that to booze. I can't sleep well at night and I am finding it harder and harder to drive after 9pm without falling asleep (or even during the daytime). My husband is the same, and for the sake of our children, one of us needs to be a bit more in control. When all 7 of us are in the car, it would be nice to know that we have a better-than 50% chance of getting there and back in one piece. A bonus would be to also lose a few pounds in weight.
The purpose of this thread, therefore, is to find ideas for drinks that don't involve too much caffeine or sugar to enjoy whilst avoiding alcohol. I like diet Coke, and I like Boots Shapers Ginger beer stuff as it is fairly 'dry'. I drink quite a lot of black coffee but I need to cut down on that to improve my chances of getting a decent amount of sleep. Has anyone got any interesting ideas for drinks that may be tasty and not too sweet? Cold as well as hot. I'm not a big fan of fruit infusions, and I prefer water very cold (which isn't always an option). Can you get elderflower drinks which aren't full of sugar for instance?
Any suggestions gratefully received.
Fluff x
Here's a tip that sounds daft, but it worked for me - have a bottle of something alcoholic that you don't really like, in the fridge. My weapon of choice was Strongbow - when I felt I needed an alcohol hit, it did the job, but meant I didn't drink anywhere near as much as I did when I had whisky.
I find the de-caffeinated version of Alta Rica instant coffee, indistinguishable in taste from the real stuff.
Big hugs guys---great decision and one that has reaped enormous rewards for me. You are absolutely right about the sleep patterns too.
Tesco do a nice range of cheap diet pop that includes dandelion n burdock and ginger beer. Herbal and green teas are a god send particularly if you leave em to chill and ice em up.(Time to dig the teapot out)
I don't think you need to lose weight you are absolutely scrummy as you are but if you avoid the booze and sugary drinks it will make that goal a hell of a lot easier.
Hope this helps, let me know in PM if I can help any further.
as a thought
? have you taken a trip the doctors as a just incase as there could be other reasons why you cannot sleep at night but you can fall asleep dureing the day/evening
as contribiting this to alcohol as it may not be this it could be worth considering thoe
I'm not a massive drinker of alcohol, probably have a binge night out once every six months or so. I don't really like the taste of alcohol so I find it difficult to find something I like to drink.
Southern Comfort is my tipple although I have recently been introduced to wine (it was posh though... the supermarket shit tastes like crap still). Anyway... I can take it or leave it, don't need it to relax or have a good time on a night out and I'm not really a huge fan of drunk people.
I don't drink tea or coffee either. I drink a lot of water with diluting juice in it. Sugar free and better for you than most fizzy drinks.
I have to say that I do find it a bit worrying that you have trouble staying awake while driving though. Regardless of alcohol consumption, I'd be getting checked over by the doctor cause it's not just your family you have to worry about while behind the wheel of a car.
Good for you though... my mum gives up booze for weight loss and it works for her.
Is it possible that a contributing factor to your daytime drowsiness is sleep apnoea? You may spot it in each other - breathing becomes blocked and/or very severe snoring indicates partial blockage. It is exhausting but pretty obvious to a partner. And very treatable.
Just a thought.
As to the drinks - one of my favourites for thirst quenching as well as pleasure is tonic with lemon juice - I like the astringency. Or tonic with Bitters. Very flavoursome.
you could also try alcohol free beer/wine. :gagged: :gagged: :scared: Depends how desperate you are. LOL
I gace up drinking over 7 years ago for one reason and another...I have to say that we go through bottles and bottles of the cheap fizzy water from Tesco (14p odd for 2 litres) and mixed with the usual non-sugar cordials is more refreshing than just water.
If you drink heavily your quality of sleep is not what it should be- you are unconcious for 7 hours rather than asleep...there is a massive difference. You wake up having not given your body any chance to re-cuperate hence the need to sleep sooner than you would consider normal.
I`m practically teatotal, even when we go out i only drink diet coke, and at home i like herbal teas, camomile with vanilla and honey is very soothing, peppermint picks you up and lemon with ginger is good for the winter months when you need something a little warming, as for cold drinks, its either caffeine free diet coke or cranberry juice.
I dont drink alcohol at all fluff. . I have 2 cups of coffee in the morning and over the course of the day drink probably 10 cups of T...after about 9pm I only drink herbal T. chamomile is a good one last drink before bed as it is has a calming affect. . herbal t's have loads of flavors now and a couple of t-spoons of honey added to them make for a not too bad drink. . avoid fizzy drinks as much as possible to start with...make your own smoothies if you want a comfort drink....can have lots of fun concocting different ones and add creams.. ice creams etc for extra sugar hits..as for the sleep thing i have a terrible sleep pattern still but regular meals a bit of exercise and time to wind down prior to bed can be of some help...key is not to worry about not sleeping too much as that will in turn keep you awake....be well xx
I gave up drinking for February, a friend does it every year and I decided to join him. Most interesting experiment which I shall repeat probably every 3 or 4 months. I found that lime, soda and a couple of dashes of Angostura bitters was a very enjoyable substitute when out and about.
What do Angostura bitters taste like? :scared:
I have discovered a very nice ginger and lemongrass cordial though.
And I am going to try a snoring remedy for the sleep apnoea.
Thanks for your suggestions everybody :inlove:
