Nowadays there are fewer screen idols it seems to me. Not so many gods or godesses on celluloid. Ok. there are a few big screen names about granted. Your Depps and your Pitts your Jolie's for example. but do they have the awesome presence of a Cagney, Wayne or a Garbo?
Like we have a throw away Society. Do we also throw away our stars?

With tv and films being as big and as many as they are now, it's bound to happen. In the olden days lol there were probably one or two channels to watch on tv. Films were only seen at the flicks, so the people that did appear on those films were made to look like great stars( not saying they were not).
Now the entertainment industry is massive, and if you don't cut it as they say, new and better will be along shortly to take their place.

I fear that we all look through rose tints to a certain extent.
The screen idols which you remember are just the tip of the iceburg, there were many others who were tossed aside after a fleeting affair with fame. As it is today.
It's the same with classic songs, you only remember the good ones because they are classic, the others are discarded from your memory. This allows more mature people to say "in our day the songs/films were much better".
This is only my view and opinion.
I think the cinema was more of a novelty in the old days - people don't appreciate things so much now.
Plim sad
We don't have the idols today like the golden days of film...mainly down to the media in a way...would you ever see Bette Davis or Joan Crawford on a bad hair day...and if a star had done something bad and there was a few who did...their studios would normally cover it up...now media love to dish the dirt up on the stars...and as they are seen as just normal human beings...they lose their idol status.
Yeah and I bet nobody ever saw Greta Garbo's pussy as she got out of a limo. There's just no class these days.
Mae West, where's the Mae West of today?
Or, who could possibly play Barbarella in a remake? Apparently they've cast Drew Barrymore, and that is so, so very wrong.
The only actress we could think of who could pull it off was Heather Graham... maybe a few years ago...
(If you haven't seen the original, watch it, it's properly ace).
Ditto your sentiments Tomu 'Barberella' - Sheer psychodelic Class  Otherwise I thik the viewpoints given previous are good. I wonder though if my generation and those to follow will ever think of 'our' generations 'Stars' as Lengendary? I guess not by what is said previously. hmmmm
These days a star could sneeze in a nightclub and it'd all over the internet 5 seconds later lol!
I think they were far more able to control and protect their image back then but it was also true that those stars sure were stars - Garbo, Gable and co!
Hasn't Parkie given up his chat programme because he felt there weren't any of the *classic stars* left to interview?
I wachted The Whicker Man the other night, was great seeing some of the *oldies* whom I'd long forgotten..
I remember when I first moved to Bristol, few months later I saw Cary Grant cruising in a car up an down the streets here. When I excitedly told my Mam and Gran that I'd seen him they laughted at me, until they saw the local news that night lol He had come back to revisit the home of his birth..
I think nowadays, some the *so called stars* are celebs for maybe the wrong reasons. Times have changed an we look at the past through rose tinted glasses...... but it was great wasnt it?
