Does anyone know if there are significantly higher costs involved in transportation ect to rural petrol stations?
Or is it as ben says just supply and demand?

It's based on distance from the nearest refinery or distribution depot.
Ty,so it isnt just being hiked because they can.
OK anther question occurred ,people drive to find a cheaper petrol station, but this presumably uses fuel,at which point does it become uneconomic?
Mrs flower gets regular email updates telling her where the cheapest fuel is in the local area .....no driving around involved.
oooOOOooohh now theres a plan!!
Scary....

What would be an ever better plan is to correlate the best fuel prices with your weekend "outings" pmsl

Marmite is now more expensive than petrol per ltr!!!
I'll have to restrict home movement now as I only get 3 sarnies per shag :upset:

Obviously it is legal what they do, but am suprised that something has not been done about motorway service stations to be honest.

Do what exactly?
They buy a product with a view to selling it, decide a price at which they sell, and it is then the choice of the motorist if they buy or not.
As you point out, the journeys with your vans are planned to avoid the necessity of buying fuel from a motorway services, my journeys are planned in the same way.
The retailer has the choice of setting the price at which they sell, the consumer has the choice of buying at that price, or buying elsewhere, and with the many thousands of fuel retail outlets in this country, what are the motorway services doing that would merit or warrant something being done about them?

this.........

Which is similar to what you said I admit, but it is immoral at the very least and I for one would love people to stop using them, and then for them to go down the pan.
Maybe they charge such high prices to try and recoup back the losses from people not using them so much now dunno

I don't think so.
It's like the story often put about that shoplifting causes the prices of goods in shops to be higher than they could be.
If shoplifting stopped, consumers wouldn't see any benefit, companies and shareholders would see greater profit.
And for what it is worth, I have used motorway services, and will use them in the future, they have been especially handy going to and from munches.
And I agree with the sentiment in the link you provided, that the supermarket is a better and cheaper alternative to the motorway services, but then couldn't it be argued that it has come at the cost of the independants, the local stores, and ultimately, the community?
Where does the voting with the feet stop?
Yes fair points essex.
I pay a little more than I would at tesco cos our local independent is 24 hours and tesco aint and the indy dont mind me wearing my helmet n tescos do.

That only ever happened to me once in a BP garage....I will never use one of them again.

Bloody hell, how badly do you drive?
If I remember rightly, you have the 130bhp version, and you are getting 450 miles to a tankful, up until recently, I had the 150bhp version, and I'd regularly see over 50 miles more!

My previous Saab (the one you are on about ?) was a Saab 900 155bhp FPT version but the one I have now is a Saab 9000 230bhp LPT version :-)
I dare say if I went steady on a run it would return something like 40mpg but round town it gives about 25-28mpg....

Erm... I don't know what version it is in those terms... it's a 1.9 TDI... its apparently been chipped but I don't know anything about that innocent and I can't say I've accurately looked at the miles, that was a bit of an approximate guess but I will do just for you this month! kiss

redface
Misread the quote....
And it's not a Vectra either....
strange really
petrol stations are owned by the the petrol giant's but ran by franchises
so the price is set by the franchise dependent on many factors like the rates you can have two stations that are a mile apart but have very different rates as they both come under different councils
the same with motorway service stations there are huge rates involved in motorway service station's due to location
add the fact, that to place the service station on a motorway the petrol company will have to pay for all the slip roads ,drainage etc (and tarmacing is about a 1 million a mile on a motorway )so the rent will be far greater for the franchise than a normal petrol station
it's like having a shop if its on main high street the rates and rent will be greater than having a shop in a back road
the other thing to take into account when buying fuel is there is different quality Morrison's and sainsburys buy a cheap grade of fuel
during the process of making fuel contaminated fuel raises to the top this is skimmed off and re-refined
this lower grade fuel is then sold cheaply to the likes of sainsburys and Morrison's
who are able to keep prices low

Not quite true Lizalenrob,
All fuel sold in the UK must meet the ISO standards of:-
BS EN 590 Diesel
BS4040 Unleaded Petrol
BS7800 Super Unleaded Petrol
And is the 'base' product that goes into every fuel tanker at a refinery or depot. The difference is then made by adding an 'additive' (basically a detergent to the base fuel)
this gives the difference to the 'brand' (eg Shell's 'V-Power' or BP's 'Ultimate').
In days past - this used to be buy your petrol and then add a bottle of Reddex or similar.
I have never been a petrol station franchisee.
If I were such I would charge as much for my fuel as I could get away with the customers paying unless I was running a charity not a money making enterprise.
I assume those who choose to run petrol stations do the same.

All the supermarkets pull fuel from the same gantry's at the same fuel terminals as the larger fuel companies...
I've spent enough time working @ Kingsbury fuel terminal to know that....
Well steve that just goes to show you can prove anything with facts.
