hi has anyone bought a blue ray player,i'm wondering should i buy a playstation 3 with blue ray or invest in a blue ray dvd player, will the playstation 3 give me same quality as it's about 1/2 price compared to sony or samsungs b/ray players.
Im hanging fire till the battle with the rival HDDVD has been resolved you could buy one and have it end up no use like the VHSBetamax war in the 70's
But as you want a playstation anyway you coul;d go with that atleast if HDDVD wins out its still a Playsation

Probably the best thing to do.
Besides the VHS/Betamax war there was more recently the furore about the various formats of DVD/HD rewriters - some formats were mutually compatible (eg a sony might work with an Hitachi, but not with a Goodmans)
In cases like this it's always better to wait. You usually get the better format (ie the one that "Wins"), it'll usually have better/more reliable features.
And above all - it'll be far cheaper lol
The PS3 plays blu ray perfect and the quality is great, if you want a blu ray player now i'd recommend the PS3 and as some have suggested above, with the HDDVD Vs blu ray war at least the PS3 won't become worthless, although i personaly think blu ray will come out on top due to its huge backing by the larger studios.
The PS3 may have a blu ray dvd...but the way i look at it is its a games machine first...if a blu ray dvd player costs up to £1000 and a PS3 costs £400...has corners been cut to keep the price down...i'd rather have my systems seperately, wether its a dvd player, games console, surround sound system,etc...but i too will wait until the format war is over...just so long as that format is backward compatible present DVD video disc's!
PS3 is a superb blu ray player does the job better than a standalone player with constant updates from Sony. I'm very surprised with what the PS3 can do
Only issue is the region coding which so far is not hackable. So you got to decide do you want an american machine for Region A discs or UK for Region B discs. Some discs thus far are universal.
Stand alone blu ray players are expensive because they are not subsidised like the PS3 Sony lose a lot of money on each machine sold. There are no corners cut in the PS3 in fact its one of the first BR players to output at 24Hz thanks to a software update - you wont get this with stand alone BR players!
Hope this helps
yeah thanks, spose i oughta sit it out a while until we see who wins as i've had a shed full of failures like betamax video, amstrad games m/c,philips cdi etc to get couple of quid on ebay for them after costing 100's of 's just this months bonus is burning a hole in my

.....i've had a shed full of failures like betamax video....

Betamax didn't fail, it went on to be developed into the wordwide industy standard format for broadcast television (Betacam, then Beta SP, then Digibeta) and made Sony a fekin fortune while the general public were lumbered with the shite that was VHS (thanks Philips rolleyes )
Anyway, back to the question at hand. Go with the advice above and wait a while unless you have a need for a new games unit, unless you can hunt down one of the now withdrawn dual format players wink
I'm having similar problems at work with authouring systems and even apple haven't released an official HD writer yet although it is due very soon (according to our resident apple geek)
I have a nice some blue waves, they come from my violet wand..
Tends to fry discs though
