What is Mardi Gras?
Mardi Gras, also known as Shrove Tuesday, Carnival, and even Pancake Day in the UK, is an annual festival which will be celebrated on 24th February in 2009. Falling just before Lent, it traditionally marks the last opportunity for fun and feasting before 40 days of "self-denial". Mardi Gras means "Fat Tuesday" in French.
Festivities begin at the beginning of February, leading up to Mardi Gras day, and consist of parades, dancing in the street, costumes and masked balls. The modern Carnival tradition developed in Europe in the Middle ages, and is celebrated mainly in Roman Catholic communities in Europe and the Americas today. Some of the most famous celebrations are held in Nice (France), Cologne (Germany), Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) and New Orleans (USA)
Just so you know

the giving and exchanging of beads has been part of the celebrations for 150 years... having to do something for them is more since the college spring break crowd started going.......

Here's a link about the history of New Orleans Mardi Gras:

The flashing of boobs for beads is a N'awlins thing - but not one for the carnival purist, more for the hedonistic out of town conventioneer or visitor to the Quarter. It now goes on all year - you flash your tits and you get beads in return (Okay, okay... I have drawers full!) But the beads are part of Mardi Gras history - Krewes throw trinkets and prizes off the floats as they parade through the city. The floats are amazing and fighting for the "throws" is fierce.
King Cake is lush - you eat it at Mardi Gras and if you get the baby then you get lucky! (There's a plastic baby inside each cake.) It's all to do with the Wise Men visiting the infant Jesus - Mardi Gras season actually starts on the Twelth Night (Jan 6th) when the Wise Men are supposed to have visited and lasts until Fat Tuesday.
It's a beautiful amazing city and Mardi Gras is a crazy crazy time... Parades, Masked Balls, drinking, eating, street parties, the Mardi Gras Indian Tribes - now they are some serious spectacle! - the marching bands. If I was visiting for the first time I would probably avoid Mardi Gras - you don't see the city at its best. You do however, have one hell of a party!
Eat, drink and be merry... then be hungover for forty days. N'awlins knows how to party y'all!
Happy Mardi Gras!
wink
It's all pagan! wink
