Have you tried the Anno Dracula series by Kim Newman. Great alternate history story where vampirism becomes fashionable in Victorian London.
Ive not been reading a book as such, its an online journal thats kept me fascinated for weeks. Its about the travels of two guys starting in 1967 and how one goes back to revisit the same countries 30 years later taking his wife.
It also has *then and now photographs*, some little one house stops he and his mate made in 1967 are now large towns/citiessmile

Ooooo biggrin that's next on my list - spotted it for under £4 in the supermarket last night but chose Pig Island by Mo Hayder instead ....it's worth reading but isnt quite as terrifying as it's made out to be, that, or I'm just desensitised to psych-thrillers now dunno
I read it in one sitting though so it's a page turner...but the really interesting bits are too brief, for me :dunno:
Can anyone recommend me a really good edge-of-ya-seat OMG type thriller? tonight I'm on Patricia Cornwell's new one

Just bought that one.
avery bizarre story- my sister cousin and I were in barcelona a couple of years ago, it was about 6am, we were extremely drunk/etc etc... and in a random square in the middle of the gothic quarter sitting having a natter with some scottish street buskers.
Anyway it was about home time, so we wandered off through one of the little alleyways...
Next thing we knew, 3 'ghosts' were walking towards us!
We all stopped dead still as a sailor dude, in judges wig, dark, scruffy full dress costume and 2 maids, again, faces blacked out, in full costume, came slowly towards us.
We were all speechless, until we turned the corner (practically sprinting!) to walk onto a quentin tarantino film set!
It was amazing! A whole street had been decked out, new facades put up, even filth and vegetables and animals on the street!
Somehow, because we had been sitting there for the whole night, we had missed the cordoning off of the area, so had stumbled right into it!
Even more bizarre, i struck up a conversation with some random guy in spanish, who actually turned out to be quentin!doh! in my drunken state i wouldn't have cared if i was talking to the queen!
No one, of course believed us, until the very next day, we dragged them to the same place the next day(took a bit of finding seeing as our direction sense wasn't quite up to scratch!) to watch the filming!
It was then we were told it was for perfume, which i have yet to see....

who was it back there mentioned *perfume*? (Steve Clarke)... another brilliant book... your mention of it, and its rather dark feel brought it all flooding back...very very atmospheric.
I was leant the book a few years ago...>a book about a perfumierre?... me????...are you mad??!!<
I couldnt put it down!
LP

LP have you seen the film? I posted this in 'book to film' thread but no one replied. Has anyone seen it? It was bloody marvellous and I'm gagging to talk to someone about it...

p.s. Perhaps name change in the light of your new avatar to "furrylittleadorablehamster"?
I have just finished an amazing book.
Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro
It was a truly chilling book. Think Brave New World, 1984, The Midwich Cuckoos. Kath, a 31 year old woman, recounts her childhood in a modern Britain where genetic engineering has taken a slightly different path to our world.
I cannot recommend this highly enough. biggrin :D :D Read , enjoy and think.

Have read it. Did pose good thinking I admit but rather scary idea I suppose. Good book but didn't really enjoy it particularly.

The Kalahari Typing School for Men.
The fourth Mme Ramotswe book and as good as the rest. A lovely gentle read, full of human warmth and charm.
The book equivelent of Sunday evening TV. These books have a real charm.
I wouldn't normaly rush to a section in a bookshop marked charming reads but I just love these books.
Talking of charming Mma Ramotswe, I've just started The No.1 ladies' detective agency, so far I like the style. Not read any of them yet.
I've just finished Paulo Coelho's Eleven Minutes, about a Brazilian girl turned prostitute and her seeking sex without and then with love. I usually like Coelho's insight into anything spiritual but struggled to find anything deeper than the fact the two main characters fell in love with each other's minds.

It's my escape. Pure and simple. I love the written word. I love learning new things though historical or factual books and I love the fantasy of fiction and the imagination. I belong to a book group so read one a month for that, plus a few others I can squeeze in between. I love to read full stop

just started Arthur & George; Julian Barnes... havent a clue about either it, or the author...It was a random grab whilt trying to make up a *three for two* offerr..hehe I shall keep you posted
lp

finiiiiiished!
no, not only just finished, honest!
once again, this is a nice thread to see popping up now and gaian....
Arthur & George....
well then... not a bad read at all... the *arthur* is our very own Mr Conan Doyle...
the book is a sort of a mixed history of two completely seperate characters, written in serperate chapters... coming together as their lives intermingle.. George is the other dood... if you hadnt guessed
on the whole a good read... can't really say much more than that...

I thought it was about time this got resurrected from the grave! lol
I have just finished Wilbur Smith’s THE QUEST
It’s the 4th book in his Egyptian series, and he took his time writing it!
To say I was unimpressed is an understatement. It goes from enjoyable escapee fiction to complete science fiction; imho the only similarities from the well written earlier novels are the characters names!
Mrs V
I've just finished Infgernal Devices by Philip Reeve. It is a young adult book so I have had to read it in private redface . It is the third book in a series. It is a good old sci-fi adventure. BNeing a young adult book is is an easy read and makes it a rattling good read. biggrin :D

I've never being a big fan of Wilbur Smith. I know he's popular and sells millions of books but the couple of novels I read were poor. I thought they were cliched and with many dubious plot devices that didn't work or crank up the tension.

agreed, i just cant get intothe other books not in the egyptian series. I've tried and tried but they just dont appeal. This fourth book is written in the same style which is why i haven't enjoyed it!
Just started reading "A Thousand Splendid Suns" by Khaled Hosseini - so far it's brilliant.
I read his previous "The Kite Runner" which I thought was a wonderful book. It relates the story of a boy growing up in pre-Soviet and pre-Taliban Afghanistan
but with some universal themes that make it very appealing.
Last summer I read "Who stole my blackberry" by Martin Lukes. For those of you who don't know "he" has a regular serialisation in The Times. He is a fictional figure made up by a very clever woman (naturally wink )
It is hilarious, the whole text is emails and texts sent by Martin to his various work colleagues within a big London corporate marekting agency. It is clever, ingenious and we ALL know a real life Martin Lukes so very very funny. Makes a fabulous change from anything heavy, perfect holiday read!

p.s. VERY behind on my serious reading, have piles of books to read (coughs - too much time in chatrooms! redface ) and shall be polishing off a few over you holiday.
Am I the only one excited about the new Harry Potter tommorow.

Eldest is desperate to read it too. I just want to see who cops it!
I won't have to read too much- whoever it is will doubtless meet their demise either just before the halfway mark, or at the start of the last third.
