Eldest is desperate to read it too. I just want to see who cops it!
I won't have to read too much- whoever it is will doubtless meet their demise either just before the halfway mark, or at the start of the last third.
I'll be on the warpath mad if she's killed poor Harry off. Hes been through soooooo much.
Someone bring me back to reality please

To paraphrase dear, dear Oscar
"There is only one thing worse than not reading Dorian Gray and that is reading it"
Now Brave New World top book smile
I read a fantastic book recently called Kokoda by Peter Fitzsimons.. well worth a read if you like accounts of world war 11.
This is more factual and from soilders diarys on the Kokoda trail in Papua New Guniea or taken from despatch notes of Generals in charge of military ops. Very, very interesting...certainly opened my eyes.

Erm, I meant HIS DARK MATERIALS (didn't realise we're up to page 9, damn it)
Personally, I am still going through a major Muarkami phase. Weird and genius in equal measures. Totally rocks. Especially Kafka on the Shore. worship

Well today my life became a sadder place
My favourite author David Gemmell has died aged 57.
I've learnt a lot from his books about some of the most basic of feelings, and his characters always mean something to me.
He really is worth reading.
Sad Jas
XXX
I didn't know he'd died, He was also one of my favourite authors, who's books accompanied me on holidays, Michael Morecock being another a sad loss indeed.
Snowhawk
Michael Moorcock is dead?
Bugger... bang goes the Hawkwind re-union with new material then!!!
lp
I read a book on holiday called "Saving Samantha", it was a true account of a woman's mental abuse by her parents. I cried, and thought about so much through out that book, never has a book left me with so many feelings - I actually felt like I was in that poor woman's head and going through the pain with her.
Sorry to resurrect an old thread but have just finished reading a fab book
The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas by John Boyne.
It's a children's book about the Holocaust, doesn't sound inspiring maybe but oh so moving... can't recommend highly enough.

I've been reading, or should say browsing, as most of it is photographs of Graffiti Art. 'Banksy - Wall and Piece'. Its full of humour, political, and gives a bit of history of his work an how he started out etc.
I loved the quote on the back cover..."there's no way you're going to get a quote from us to use on your front cover" from a Metropolitan Police Spokesperson :lol2:

That's a fab book! I'm a bit of a fan.
I have had 'War and Peace' on my book shelves for 30 years in various cities and countries but have never once been able to face reading it. The price on the back is in old money!

I once sat opposite a person coming to the end of 'War and Peace' on the metro and I really wanted to ask him what he thought of it etc but didn't. Part of me also thought 'Yeah right! who are you kidding!' I just couldn't believe he was not only reading it but had nearly reached the end! I suppose someone's got to!
Also seen a man who looked like some high-powered lawyer reading 'Harry Potter' and wanted to laugh out loud! Lol I'm sorry but that is a children's book!
I'd recommend 'A Thousand Splendid Suns' by Khalid Hosseini - he also wrote 'The Kite Runner' which I haven't read but have seen the film of, which is very good. smile
Lol
I read the children's books I buy for my nieces out of interest and to look at the artwork which is often brilliant, just not for intellectual stimulation and not in public Lol
Harry Potter is one of those supposedly crossover books that is meant to appeal to both audiences. I suppose there's no harm in anyone reading what they like but I see it as a bit like Enid Blyton, which I left behind a long time ago!

It's nothing at all like Enid Blyton! tells a good story - reading is not always about intellectual stimulation. Oh, and there's absolutely no reason to be embarrassed about reading children's books in public - a good book is a good book!
Oh lol
Well I have had short excerts read to me and that's the way it came across; similar type of scenario if not actual writing style.
I'll admit it, I'm a book snob redface
I am venturing into the classics by the aid of my local recycling centre, getting free books whenever I find them.
Just finishing Les Miserables.

Think the reason I like War and Piece is that is by Banksy himself! Normally its other people making money from his work. Although saying that he's just been asked to authenticate a number of his paintings that are up for sale (they haven't asked him to authenticate his wall art as that will bring up other issues). Seems a few people have been copying his style an signing his name!
As for War and Peace, I gave it a go once or twice but didn't make it to the end...talk about hard work!! (for me anyway lol)

Bloody great book that
I am having a Dickens-fest at the mo... work-related but loving it all the same!
What larks!
Just finished reading 'My Life by Fidel Castro with Ignacio Ramonet'
An amazing account of the life of one of the most controversial and influential world leaders of modern history.
An interesting antidote to the relentless American anti-Cuba propaganda campaign.
I've almost finished Belle De Jour and it's excellent! So open, funny and well written, loved it
I have a hankering to re-read Submission by Marthe Blau but alas my copy is packed away in storage... may have to invest in another one. It made me think very naughty thoughts! :rascal:
