A curious incident
Am half way through this at the moment.
My eldest son has Aspergers syndrome and this book is something that all should read if they know someone who has it. It really does let you see how they think.

I can highly recommend Perfume by Patrick Suskind. A dark tale set in Eighteenth century France. The story concerns the central characters obsessive drive to procure the perfect scent that will make him fully human. The tale is told with a dazzling narrative brillance. Perfume is a hauntingly powerful tale of murder and sensual depravity.
Also the autobiograhical Moab Is My Washpot by Stephen Fry. Full of anecdotes and very entertaining.

Perfume sounds good. I've not read it and am off to look for it right now.
Recent favourites for me are Star of the Sea by Joseph O Connor and all of Alexander McCall Smiths books about the Number One Ladies Detective Agency. They are short books and can easily be read in one night - but they are fun.
if you want a book that will make you laugh try one of david gorman's books
"Are you dave gorman?" or Dave gormans googlewhack adventure.
i very rarely laugh out loud when i'm reading but these two had me in stiches all the way through. a lot funnier than the Stand up shows he did about them

We also have a member here in SH who has Asperger's syndrome....
Stupid White Men
Hey Dude, Where's my Country?
I agree MQ, I have worked with several adults and children with various disabilities, including autism, and also have a nephew with autism. And I also take my hat off to the person in here....
Mike.
No.1 all timers;
Isabel Allende - House of the Spirits (it's a MUST!)
Any John Irving - Garp or Owen Meany (to choose between them eek!)
The thread jogged my memory for a Stephen Fry book that I enjoyed a a few years ago - The Stars Tennis Balls and also as I remember Memoirs of a Geisha was a great read. Read the No.1 Ladies Detective Agency series on hol this year - a great 'light' read.

(Oooh Miss Smilla's Feeling For Snow - Peter Hoeg)
I bought a book by Carl Hiaasen called "Basket Case" at the airport and it amused and entertained me with a pretty wild yarn. Kind of American trashy but it passed the time well, so I bought another "Tourist ...(something ot other)" for and it worked the same magic.
Florida who-dun-it's with wild and improbable plots, loads of killings, snappy dialogue, and humour.
A really mental but very very good book I read once!
Scar Culture by Toni Davidson rather mental book about child abuse although it doesnt say that the way its written lets you make your own mind up! Such a really good book!
To be honest i dont think you can beat an auto-biography or biography, there are so many people in the world with fantastic real life stories to tell, for example Norman Wisdom, Dont Laugh at Me, i love the guy but didnt know about his life, was very good reading and also very funny.
ps. i wrote to Norman Wisdom to say how much i admire him, and he sent me a signed photo back for me, how sweet of him, love him even more now! :inlove:
There are a couple of good sources that can help recommend books to you. If you create an account at Amazon you can search for books that you've read and rate them, and Amazon will then be able to suggest things that you might like to read. If you choose a title you can also see a listing of what people who read that book have also read.
Another source is the AlexLit web site at If you register (free) you can again list books that you've read and rate them, and AlexLit will then recommend other things that you might like to read. Strange, but it does actually work very well indeed.
On personal recommendations, I don't think you can beat Iain Banks; any of his mainstream fiction (rather than the SF) is good, and in particular The Wasp Factory (very black humour and it also contains a description of the very worst thing I can possibly think of, so be warned), The Bridge, Crow Road and Espedair Street are all excellent as well.
