Way back man was the hunter and he killed to feed the family, often travelling great distances, men are very competitive and had to be to surrvive hence the likeing for shooting, blood sports competitive sports and forms of transportation.
Mid 20th Century women were the home makers and their interests derived from those skills, needlecraft, baking etc. Women did all the hard work in the family and man did his 9-5 and expected to come home and do no work. Thus man rewarded himself by buying toys, whereas women are traditionally nuturing and if they had no income of their own would be reluctant to ask the husband for money to spend on frivolities and toys. Women would always make sure their children were provided for before satisfying their own needs, hence women got left out of the purchasing of leisure items.
To put it simply men never grow up and little things please little minds.

When I first became a father I started what can only be described as nesting. When my partner was only 5 months pregnant I found my self going around the house putting harnless items out of reach checking for sharp edges and decorating the nursery (the only room i've ever done as I hate decorating) and I also put that down to natural instint. there that should do it
