Ok so well over a year ago British gas hoiked up the gas n leccy bills. Gas by in my case 40% - horrendous! ok so then the Gov't or the watchdog or someone or other whinged enough for them to reduce it by 17%.
This reduction was heralded to one and all in a really politely worded letter saying. "blah de blah blah aren't we great for reducing the bills by such an extreme amount". not forgetting they put em up by 40%!!.In my simple mind a net increase of 23% not hard is it.
Now today i receive the waited for letter, once again really sweetly and almost cringingly appealing worded to us their loyal customers, Informing that they are making an increase of 15%! Of course wording it so as to have us believe they are doing us a favour.
Fine. so. that makes it
>>>if X = gas price then X +40% - 17% + 15% X is now 38% higher than it was 2 years ago!<<<<
Thats almost criminal.
Ahhh yes wonderful isnt it ! Your not wrong about the price and I sat down and worked it out
If two years Ago the price was lets say £1 then the 40% increase made it but they only increased it by 23% making it This year they add another %15.
15 % of is .18pence making the mount we then pay 1 penny higher than the increase 2 year ago.
Lets assume in their Management finance department someone had a graph created defining what money they needed over 5 years then the govt stepped in and reduced their profit. Well I would say they are now back on track and that it was a smart play to over egg the increase. now they can add anything upto 30% each year and it will never be as bad as that 40% hike they nearly did eh !
We need to create a renewable energy forum for the public which we all voluntarily pay into. the purpose of which is to find ways to stop using Gas and Electricity and really bite into these guys Profits.
Good post Lost , good post.
Aww come on they have got to make huge profits and a living like the rest of us. bolt
Saw this reassuring ditty on their business site so it must be ok. dunno
At British Gas Business we've built our reputation by putting your needs first. Over 925,000 UK businesses trust us to supply their energy. But, as a customer, you can rely on us to deliver more than gas and electricity- everyone at British Gas Business is committed to providing a first-class service, too. rolleyes
Oh yes that is definitely true me thinksflipa and who said the dandy highwayman was dead.
And then found this on their advice and solutions site
As the UK's gas and oil reserves dwindle, we are now increasingly reliant on the global energy market, and changes in the world's gas and oil prices are having a far greater effect on UK prices than ever before.
sad innocent
We've all seen the impact of record oil prices, with the cost of petrol rising to over a £1 a litre. And over the past 10 months, all British energy suppliers will have had to pay more for the gas and electricity they buy. - a staggering 45% more*.
After a welcome series of decreases last year,we did all we could to keep our prices as low as possible for you. But we now find that we have to move them up. (I must have been on holiday when that happened)
Our new prices came into effect on 18th January. poke smackbottom
Seems fair to me now it all makes sense, I mean they could have passed on the whole 45% to us over paid oinks. Who was it who said you have never had it so good confused: banghead
If it was still British Gas, before privatisation, you would not now be seeing these increases.
Maggie said that competition would lower prices and the rest of Europe would soon privatise their energy supplies.
Guess what? It hasn't and they didn't!!
John & Shel
Competition DOES lower prices.
if you can show me more than one way Gas can be delivered to your house via the same pipes that are currently installed to your house then you have chance to suggest competition. Currently there is no competition so its not the idea but the implementation that at fault here.
now if we could allow more pipes to arrive at your house then you would have competition.
But who wants to keep digging up the roads ?
I think that we have to depend too much on Gas from outside UK and our privatised industry is at the behest of others -
How I long for the distant days of my childhood when we had the old "gasometers" in every town and produced our own :!:
In the modern world, I know this cannot be and coal produced gas was not good for the environment - so we should expand the Nuclear industry, with care - and hydro power.
Plim rolleyes
Would be interesting to see a comparison of the price variation of wholesale gas against the variation of consumer prices and power company profits
Lost,
I'd highly recommend that u go on We did when moving from N-Power after they put their prices up a few years ago. Found loads that were cheaper and are now with Southern Electric. We are saving a fortune with them and even my mam who moved from N-Power to Southern Electric, saved a vast amount that she didn't expect. She shares her house with 2 teenagers who don't know how to switch tv's off, lights off etc.

lol tell that to earthy pmsl
its the same as the petrol doesnt matter who you switch it or how much effort you make into reducing your carbon footprint your bills will keep going up.
Why do you think people some people don't believe this global warming thing is happening, that its just the planet going through a cycle.
I remember the millemium bug and how planes would fall out of the sky , it never happened.
And if you think governments are honest with what they tell you then your a fool.
This recycling, high fuel costs all in the name of saving the planet is hogwash and forced down your throat until you give in and just pay up.
It doesnt matter who you fill your car up with or get your energy paying high prices whether you like it or not.
If global warming was such an important live saving issue all forms of motor-racing would be banned due to the added pollution it makes every travel would be greatly reduced and heathrow wouldnt be looking to expand.
People are blind to the taxes the government puts in place because you think the planets in danger.
I tend to agree in part, I was reading an interesting article somewhere recently (will try to find it later so I can point to it) that stated if you as an individual, did everything right, I.e. recycled All your recyclables, composted your perishables, used your car / bike as little as possible, invested in solar heating for your water etc, bought energy efficient bulbs blah blah blah……….
Then one person took a flight from Heathrow to Glasgow (say a politician going to a meeting?) they would nullify all the efforts you have just made for an entire year rolleyes
That said, one does almost feel one should be doing something. Sooooooooo
Two birds with one stone, I am in the process of building a bio-diesel production plant in my shed, much cleaner emissions for the environment and one up the arse for the tax man and the greedy petrochem companies as my fuel costs will plummet from the current 9 ppl to a very affordable ppl lol
And apparently it’s much better for my engine too
I agree with the prices being to high along with petrol, on top of just all the other car taxes, let alone the other taxes but just wanted to add this just because its a bit of trivia i have remembered for some strange reason.
Gas and electricity is produced by just a cpl of 'manufacturers', 4 for gas and just 2, if i remember, for electricity and thus the price is pretty much standard.
The country, due to privatisation, is broken into regions and each company owns a home region and for its customers in the the other regions it buys it from the other companies so the theory is that no 1 company can get to big but also companies that own the 'licence' to produce are in the driving seat so that when the tender comes up a bidding war is created. That said, the manufacturing companies obviously use the fact that they are in at the ground level and can offer cheaper (in theory) as a barganing tool against those that are not when 'trading' gas buying between regions and that is why the price in Liverpool for example is different from Norwich.
By the way British Gas are a manufacturer so go figure!
That said, would just point out the biggest name in the industry, British Gas, BT, Tesco etc etc are always the headline to news when in fact it is more often than not indicative of the whole industry i.e. pretty sure a good few other gas companies have put prices up.
With all that said, the simple answer to our stupidly high prices is the good old British tax system of our governments. But what do we do, panic buy and queue up for petrol so we can get to work. In america they set fire to the stations and stayed home!

if cars started to run on LPG overnight the pump stations would increase the prices to match unleaded.
Its a load of old before anything and the powers that be like it that way.
And they is no point placing solar panels all over your roof because you will never be able to get a decent enough return on your money.
global warming was such a bad thing as the governments make out all motorsports, air travel would be stopped.
Lights out after 8 bloke who speaks the crap (al gore) has a house so big it used more electricity to light the rooms in a day than the rest on the same road uses in a week.
Will the chinese listen? like hell.
