Calling Geeks R Us!

OK - today seems to be the day for this.....
I have an old 'Time' (don't laugh) laptop!
I haven't used it in yonks (or Lancs either for that matter) and, being security conscious, I changed my Win2K admin password.
Now I can't remember it. (I know, I know - girlie thing to do)
Has anyone got any password crackers.
I downloaded a couple a few weeks ago but they didn't do the trick.
I was going to give it to my eldest but (a) I need to get the password sorted and (b) I can't remember if I stored any piccies on there rolleyes

- hence why I haven't taken it in to a PC repair shop.
So you can see I'm in need of assistance from a real Geek!

Would it not be a lot easier to reformat the hard drive to ensure that no inadvertant pictures are stored on there?

I've tried that too.
I'll need to get the thing out the loft and try again.
I've a funny feeling I set a bios pw too!
(......I can hear you all tutting and see you rolling your eyes now!.....)

Reformatting should wipe the lot though.
Just f/disk it then reinstall the old / new operating system.

I'll come back to this thread in a couple of days - once I've got the laptop out again and retried my original efforts
If there has been a way to do FDisk, I would have done that though already.
But certain wasn't quite that simple. As I say I haven't tried to do anything with it for quite weeks so I can't remember exactly at what point I was snookered on it. I was considering just scrapping it (minus hard disk of course), but I thought it worth a last ditch effort to get it going again.

F/Disk should be found on any windows boot disk.
Just start the said laptop with the disk in & run F/Disk from there.
Any problems just PM / MSN me

Alex,
If you set the BIOS password on your laptop erm OOPS!
You'll need to take out the battery (the big one) then unscrew the back and find the BIOS battery (little one) and remove that, wait about 5 mins then put the batteries back in and Fannies your Aunt...
Now the bad news, this doesn't work with all laptops (i.e. Toshibas). Those need to go back to the manufacturers to be reset.

I know John - it was stupid!
...... but i think I can find the bios battery though....
I just never gave it a thought that removing the bios battery would allow me in (obviously after replacing it!)
I will give that a try too, if a suggestion in PM does not work.

John's dead right , reformatting pointless for resetting bios password, only different thing i would say is remove cmos (complimetary metal oxide semiconductor) battery for 20 mins, not five , allthough this is not guaranteed to succeed in all cases.
gimme a shout in msn later and i'll help ya sort it if ya get stuck.

You got me wrong pal, the reason I said to reformat was to make sure that no pictures were left on the hard drive before Alex passed it on the kids.

Sorry m8 , if it sounded like i was having a pop at ya , that was deffo not the intention, and of course u are right bout the piccy deletion.
There is of course a third solution to this ....
I'll give Alex Â£20 for it and she can buy a new handbag with the proceeds rotflmao

I shall be trying it tomorrow!
Slyde - I would have been fdisk'ing anyway to clear the disk. Not just because of the pics, but also to make sure there was optimum disk space available.

Hi if you still had no luck PM me, I know how to circumvent the password no problem as I have done it a few times at work (no I not a hacker but I have been an IT Manager)
Equally I can advise on secure hard disk erasure tools, FDISK not really secure, you would need an overwrite to be sure...
Happy to help if you still even slightly worried, by PM or Phone if need be.
