Can changing the law really protect our children?

I feel changing laws can not really protect our children.
You can give out stiffer sentences which then would keep one locked up, but there will always be many to step into their shoes.
I feel all we can do is arm our children with the knowledge of situations they may find themselves in and best ways to be able to deal with them.
To educate your children about the dangers in life is to help protect them. We all want to wrap them in cotton wool to shield them from danger, me included but I feel it isn’t the best for them.
So I have told my children about cases that have happened in the past and questioned them on what they would do if they found themselves in the same situation
We all want to protect our children from evil, but it is a fact that has always been around since the year dot.
To me to be forearmed is to be forewarned.
A shame but that has always been the way in society.

since labour govt. came to power we've had so many laws introduced but some are just a form of draining more cash from tax payers but the one relevant to this thread is drink driving has been upgraded to criminal offence and anyone convicted cannot work with children,i dont see the connection at all

If you consider the problem objectively, you realise that laws are not of much use. People are supposed to realise that something is illegal, and not do it. Obviously, with the courts packed to the brim, and prisons likewise, that is not working. In fact, it is social convention that is not working. Sex with children is wrong. That message is clearly not getting to some. Maybe the "obsession" with sex in this society is the problem ?
But then, child abuse (sexual) seems to be across-the-globe, not just sex-obsessed western nations.
It is interesting to consider how a child is to be educated about possible sex abuse by a male parent, without affecting the child-parent bond. Interesting, but abhorrent.

There are already childrens books available that deal with child abuse at a level younger children will understand.
The problem is, you don't want to make children suspicious of every adult that shows the innoccent affection.
Child abuse is no worse now than it's ever been, it's just that due to the increase in media accesssability, we are all far more aware of it.
Just look at how many cases arise going back decades.
There was a time when the world simply did not listen to children, now they do, only these days they tend to over-react to make up for past innaction and ignorance.

I am glad you had something constructive to say.
I wasn’t just talking about child abuse, I am more worried that my children would be beaten up attacked but the youth out there to be perfectly honest.
No laws would protect my children of this the same way laws will not protect them of paedophiles. What I am saying is to educate your children in the dangers is the best way. That’s my opinion.
A lot of parents find it hard to raise such issues with children I for one also, but feel it is my duty as a parent In the hope it could help protect them.

Don't laws only come into play after the fact? If someone has decided to commit the act in the first place, the law as an entity isn't going to stop them, the only thing that may give pause is the fear of the punishment.
Educating children to what is out there is the only way to proceed, even then sadly sometimes it's not enough.

Minxy have a peep at this link.I hope I am not doing anything wrong showing this link. dunno

Now we are talking about protecting our kids, but what the heck are the powerrs to be doing?
This guy got 20 weeks, yes 20 weeks for the filth they found on his computer. Also as he had already served that time, he walked free.
20 weeks!! Call that justice? No wonder there are people out there who do such things with such crap punishments dished out if caught, and I did say IF caught.
He should have been put in a room with some parents who's kids have been abused. Ten minutes in there would have been the best punishment for this thing! cool

777 I watched a chat show the other day about children chatting to men on msn type sites, the girls were unaware that who they had added, were men, the guys enticed the girls to meet and were murdered. It wasn’t in this country, but I let my 11 year olds watch the programme, it was the parents being interviewed and talking about the risk. This parents didn’t have a clue who their children were talking to My children were horrified, but I said to my daughter after do you see now why I like to see who you are talking to on msn.
She said mum I don't know these things can happen, she always calls me now to ask if who is in her contact list are safe, Children are naive they don’t know the dangers. We as parents need to make them aware, to protect them from such evils isn’t doing them any good.
All the laws in the land will not stop these things from happening!

To be honest I would far prefer a paedophile got his jollies by looking at pics on his computer rather than going out and finding the real thing.
The problem with paedophilia is that it is a physical urge that has to be satiated somehow. Those urges don't respond to laws, entreaties or even common-sense. They only respond to getting what they need.
Yes I realise that some poor kid has already been abused to get the pictures in the first place, but if those pictures can prevent 100, 1000, 10,000 paedophiles going out on the street then they could be perceived to be a necessary evil.
Which would you prefer? Paedophiles staying at home wanking over the computer or in the park wanking over some violated child?
And before the narrow-minded can comment. I am not proposing that paedos be fed a supply of kiddy porn, nor am I proposing that they shouldn't be punished if kiddy porn is found on their computers.
What I can see though is that kiddy porn does have a use in protecting our kids whether it is by keeping them off the streets or their collections being a way for the authorities to be aware of their presence.
Yes I know escalation is also a problem whereby sooner or later perving at the pics isn't enough, but they will have served their purpose by delaying that final step. Every day of delay means another child is safe.
And once again I can see a need for stating quite categorically that I revile kiddy porn, I revile the people who use it and I think any person proven to be a paedophile should be monitored for the rest of their lives.

It has to be said that, unpalatable as that is, it's also pretty rational if you can look at it objectively.
However, I would highly recommend body armour lol

Yes people do have strange ideas, such as the notion that arresting and punishing paedos will stop them doing what they do whereas in reality all it does is delay them.
Additional laws are not the way to go, if anything they just confuse the issue. As many people have said in this thread, child education is one of the answers. Unfortunately the level of that education isn't currently enough to stop a child reacting as a child does. The education they are getting tries to prevent their innocence being affected. I don't think that is enough. I believe that a child being told what will happen (at a level the child can understand) should they accept those sweeties is more of a deterrent to the kid than just saying no, don't accept them it's a nasty man offering them. I believe that a small loss of innocence is an okay price to pay for increased safety.

True Mar.
All the talking in the world to kids will not stop the evil sicko, who goes out there to snatch a child. How can a child like Sarah Payne put up a fight against a grown man.
You can teach kids to a degree but you can never prepare yourself for something like that, when it happens.
Proper punishments and keep them off the streets for good, as they will never be cured, but they seem to be brilliant at hoodwinking their social workers into thinking they are, when they are released.

I actually don't think it is logical or rational to allow paedophiles to have kiddy porn on their P.C. to prevent anything.

my apologies about the first bit. I was typing with my confusion.
as for the 2nd point. Your implication was that the perusal of porn would somehow prevent them carrying out their 'activities' as the porn would somehow sate their appetite.
I have to say that some of my sex can be difficult and dangerous and certainly in some countries (although thankfully not this one) illegal.

The "funniest" thing is that over 90% of child-abuse takes place in the home, by close family ... this ludicrous tabloid peedofilya scare where they try and convince you there's a paedophile behind every bush is not only hysterical, it's downright dishonest. In fact it's actually dangerous, as it's inadvertantly persuading people that paedophiles *only* lurk behind bushes in parks.

And not only are most cases of child abuse happening in the home if daddy is having sex with little sarah and he is found out and goes to prison once he has 'served his time' theres nothing at all to stop him moving back into the family home where social services will probabily call round once a week to keep a check on stuff confused
These kind of child abusers are far more dangerous than the 'bush lurkers' because why would you even think about doing a police check on dad or uncle Bill?
I doubt any law will protect children, if someone wants to hurt or abuse a child they will always find a way.

Yes they will.... confused :?
If they are paedophiles they will find anyway they can to do what the brain tells them they need to do! They have to feed that urge they have somehow, anyhow and anyway.
Its been proven in the states that castration doesn't stop thought processes and urges - its always with them. Just because they don't have a penis doesn't mean they won't violate another child again....they just do it differently :?

Innocent people wrongly accused OF being a threat to Children:

Now it's on 'Eastenders'....:

This is just typical of our entire Criminal Justice System within the United Kingdom...just punish forever. Build more prisions..lock 'em up & throw away the key. rolleyes
What I would do with people convicted of Sexual Child Abuse is Chemical Castration.
Like what is done in nations such as Denmark & Sweden. Spain has just made this practice legal.
It lowers the Sex Drive in a person convicted by law of Sexually Abusing a Child.
According to Medical Research in a couple of years the medicine will become better & totally eradicate the sexual urge.

My final point is this...as a nation
(United Kingdom) we need to become more sophisticated along with being intelligent when dealing with the issues of why people committ crime
confused:
This mentioned 'lock 'em up & throw away the key' mentality in Britian, can be linked to the period in time when poor people of this nation where forced to live in Australia. This was due to the higher classes living in fear of a French style Revolution by the poor.
Instead of helping they just went for the quick fix & demonized people. Hyped up the threat in newspapers & in Government then separated familes.
When I was in School we read the diary of a Man that as a 12 year old Boy was taken away whilst playing on the street & sent to Australia.... :!:
Due to being accussed of the theft of an Apple.
It's in our British nature to knock people down & go for the simple answers hence the reason why the tabloid press sell millions in the U.K.
People like simple answers & not the complex truth.
Life & the questions rasied within is...like a 'game of Chess' & not Checkers.
It's complex & needs careful planing for it to be correct.

the laws that are put in place to protect us all often fall far short from what they are supposed to do.
however the laws surrounding children and child abuse are pathetic to say the least.
peanut, i read your post several times and maybe my experiences are what stop me from being able to read it objectively. when one person is found to have 150,000 pictures of children ranging from babies of a couple of days old how is that any better than the person who actually tortured those children he's wanking over?
i live in hope that there are some out there who can live all their lives without giving in to the temptation to abuse a child sexually by whatever means. but i seriously think that is highly unlikely.
someone mentioned children being killed at the end of the abuse to try and provent being found out. for some i'm not sure which is the worst because once you are dead the nightmare stops. but for the living it's something you have to cope with for the rest of your life, a living nightmare. it doesn't just effect one part of your life and can not always be left behind.
to try and protect your children and in such a way as to not take away all innosence is a mamoth task.
whips

But it's a task which many parents manage remarkably well.
I think Peanut's point (and he'll correct me if I'm mistaken) is that the pictures have already been made available - by wanking over them, the paedophile is not hurting that child, or any other, any further. It's not a good situation, but it's better than yet another child being abused, surely?
