Yep, I'd go with that. Often just instinct.

I'm begining to wonder
I haven't had a "Shag me PM" in ages confused
Probably this applies to real life as well as swinging, but its always the lack of consistancy in details which catch out the deceitful.
Don't know about manipulators, only come across a very few of them so takes a while to recognise them for what they are.

 agreed
lets stop this, you're scaring me now :scared: lol
To seriously answer the question, I'd say if they were a really good fake it would take a while to spot it. Pertinent to this issue however is the fact that once a faker is suspected they often get away with it for longer than they should cos people don't like to speak up, or they like to see the good in people, blah blah, blah-dy, blah.
Trusting one's instincts and ACTING on them is all we can really do in any social situation, whether or not it involves swinging.
Personally, people who get too friendly too quickly, who promise ANYTHING, and those who try to steal my millions get binned straight away.

Yep - I agree. However 'instinct' is a learnt reaction to certain signals which, when interpreted by the brain add to something recognisable, in this case 'fake'. I'm interested in what constitutes the 'instinct'.
:P
I agree with blue...
people trying to steal my millions have just gotta go! lol
Seriously... usually a gut feeling from things not quite adding up across a number of things that makes me feel that things aren't right. Usually if things don't feel right then there is something more than meets the eye. Some can take sooo much longer to spot though and often not until things have gone wrong.

John

I had a neighbour once who lied to me, lied to others, stole, committed fraud on various neighbours and businesses and I KNEW from my firstencounter with him that he was a fake. The instincts kicked in immediately - the false friendship, the eagerness to help me out in every way but mostly the lies about his profession all conjured up FAKE. He later served 18 months at Her Majesty's Pleasure for it all.

I dont know if it isa learnt reaction dunno - in some cases yes, a trigger that makes you think of....for example... past experiences when someone did/ said/ behaved the same way and that triggers the instinct... :dunno:
But instinct, for me, is an innate internal warning system, that gut feelingthat 'something isnt quite right' ...and.....' cant put my finger on it' - i dont know as that's learnt at all, I think its innate (ooo the good old nature/nurture debate lol)......to the deep in the pit of your stomach niggle when the bits of the jigsaw just dont fit, the actions are inconsistant to the words, or you start asking yourself 'well, how come... '...'hang on a minute'...but you dont know why you're asking, you just are......to the all out alarm bells that feel like an anxiety attack, that wont go away, keep you awake and make your mouth dry and your head hurt. That's instinct, to me.
Face to face is easier because I get like a spidersense red mist type thing that just tells me this person is not what they seem. I don't get it often but my gut reactions are very rarely wrong once triggered off.
It is built up from a series of expressions, micro expressinons, where they place their eyes when talking to you, how they hold their hands, do they fold their arms, general body language traits and small tonal differences in their voice when subjects change or questions are asked. Small things that don't seem like natural responses or seem not to ring true.
Online is a little harder because you dont have the body language to go off, so it's normally posting style (although this can fluctuate with mood) or facts given like they are 110 in one thread and then 105years old in another, whoop whoop liar alert! lol
There are some really really good liars and fakes out there and until something really goes wrong then I'd guess you'd not know the difference until they tripped themselves up? dunno

I'm usually pretty good at sussing people out and I'm a very good judge of character. Only been caught out once and that's only because I ignored the alarm bells ringing loudly in my ear and let my heart rule my head.
As Dawnie said, it's all about inconsistencies. I think it's a combination of being able to read between the lines and pick up on body language ( one of the courses I've had to take in my job which proved to be very useful )
Innate is learnt - maybe from past recent experiences, maybe from past past experiences and maybe from evolutionary experiences. It's one reason why human children have such a long growing up period, to learn and develop properly to survive the 'jungle'
Instinct is a learnt response to various and varied stimuli which, added together, give us a warning signal, a safety signal or a learning signal. The sciopaths amongst the population - not wanting to tread on Blue's terrority here - are more able to disguise the tell tale signals which should alert us to danger. Walter Mitty type figures who pretend to be someone else for financial, emotional or physical gain can also hid their true nature.
Now I'M scared!!
id say that its the element that is found in, and often termed as being "street wise".
