This may be the same old story again, but I'd like some real people's input ( yes, I do mean everyone on here lol ). It's the ISP story.
I've been with Tiscali for about a year and half and they began life really good. Nice connection rates, good speed - overall no complaints. Then I received an email warning me of excess usage ( whoops ! ), and got quoted the 'fair usage policy'. I thought for the money they were getting it was fair, as I send video clips and use cam with my brother in Australia.
So now I've been capped. Not just at peak times, but permanently. So after a not so cheap phone call to their local South African customer services dept, they upgraded my line speed and gave me a discount, but have still capped me. When I say capped I mean ul/dl speeds equivalent to that of dial-up - at best. Needless to say I'm a little less than happy with it.
So, in your witt of wisdom, I'd like to know who you use and how you rate them, or is this thread too sensible for this time of day ! Only joking, please help as there is too many biased opinions on the net and I'd like to hear it first hand.
we use aol, not the best and here we only have a 1mg connection, BT's fault not aol, we have unlimited bandwidth, we have 4 computers on the sinngle connection 1 for each of the kids who are forever downloading films music etc. upto 8 hours a day, I will say they ain't the best liked internet provider but we have never had a problem in the 8 years we have been with them.

Thanks for that, and that actually remains top of the list. As much as I am not an A-O-hell fan, and hate their software it remains a favourite at the mo. Problem may be trying to set up the modem/router as that's not one of my strong points  Appreciate it, thanks
I switched to what was Freeserve, now Wanadoo a couple of years ago; and haven't found anything to complain about.
I often judge a company by how they deal with problems. I think in that time I've only needed to call customer services once, and that was because I fucked up.
They spoke good English and sorted the problem there and then on the phone and told me I'd be reconnected within 24 hours. I tried it an hour or so later and everything was back to normal.
I pay about £18 a month for broadband. I don't know anything about limits and bandwidth and stuff.
The onlypossible thing at the moment is when we are both online with laptops, her laptop can get a little slow. The mps (???) thing goes from 54 down to sometimes one or two. But it's always her laptop, regardless of who connects first and sometimes it happens when only she is logged on.
So I'm more inclined to think it's her fault.
She is blonde after all .
bolt
I been in other people's houses and seen them on AOL, and I've never heard anyone that didn't have a moan.
oh - in edit.
One problem we did have was setting up the wireless network when HLB moved in.
Sort of - the wanadoo stuff wouldn't talk to her laptop ?? The only way round it was to use the wanadoo usb plug in thingy. A bit annoying as her laptop came as wifi enabled. We decided to ditch the wanadoo hardware and she bought a box with flashing lights from PC World, sent the other stuff back to Wanadoo (when I get round to it redface ) and everything is now hunkydorey.
hi all,
i`m with talk talk,
i have had no problems with them at all, i fact i am on the phone at the moment upgrageing to the free broadband deal. free landline calls 24/7 and international to some places too (not sure if australia is included).
i now have a 5.5 mbps conection and it will be increased to 8 meg as it becomes available.
give them a bell and see what you think.
hope that helps.
phill.
Thanks db, I was with freeserve long long time ago, but they went the journey too due to their connection being unstable and cutting off, but appreciate that.
On the other hand - the blonde dig confused I know it's May already just didn't realise it was 'have a dig at a blonde week again so soon ) , but if I flutter my eyes and smile sweetly you may give us a break. wink

If you add in a little jiggle of the titties, I'd give you the world
Although . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
I think if you did; it would be more a case of you giving me something redface
I hope you get something sorted
hi there we used to have tiscali had nothing but problems with then kept loosing connection they said must be the line so bt came out and checked it line was ok so we packed them in and went to bt loads better never lost connection
On the other hand we've been with Tiscali for ages and had no problems at all whereas when we used to be with BT had not end of problems (and spent ages contacting their bloody expensive 'helplines')
from carfone whorehouse and its fine, currently on 2meg and u/l i am upgrading to 8mb option, although this is limited to 40mb (dont think i will reach that ever!!) ...but i must say normally a fast reliable service with very few outages (allthough there has been 1 or 2) so overall having tried BT, Tiscalli and AOHell i wud go for talktalk anytime....
At thos rate I'm going to have to get the coloured pens out and make a pro's and cons chart - although, unlimited means more to me than speed ( not directed at you again DB redface )
Hi
I work in a pc repair shop and the most problems we get are with AOL and BT - keep well clear. Whilst things are working it may be good but when things aint it can be a real pain to sort. Loads of software issues, new versions not fully debugged, fills your registry with bucketfulls of shite and its not needed and hellish to remove.
Been with Supanet for 3 years now - not one hassle, regularly downoading large files and never had a problem.
If you've got a bit of time check . You might also want to check out their forums for some advice.
Good luck.

But is it not possible to run AOhell using a modem/router as the dial up and not load their software - so just really renting their line as I don't need any of their services ? confused
We've been with Supanet ( ) for 3 years now and had no problems at all, if you are a broadband custome the helpline is free and thier people really seem to know thier stuff. We have also just moved our phone connection to them, way cheapet than BT. and some reasonable no limit packages too.

yes thats how we use it we have 4 puters and only one has the aol software, the rest are free from aol and they use and netscape to access the net and I will say again in 8 years we have never had a problem.
I am with bulldog broadband at the moment and have had no problems at all. It's part of the cable and wireless network and I think they have offers on phone calls too.
I pay on average a month for 2 meg bb no download limits.

They have 8 (and 16!) meg bb in some areas (not mine yet, sheep keep chewing the cables) and I think a good introductory offer for new members smile
