Reading Kiss's thread about daft things we did as kids made me think about childhood holidays.
I didn't travel abroad until I was 16. Almost all of my holidays were at Jaywick in Essex or Dymchurch in Kent. Endless days on the beach digging and damming streams. Heaven.
Dymchurch had the attraction of the Romney-Hythe and Dymchurch Railway. Small steam trains that puffed up and down the coast.
Jaywick is about 50 miles from where we lived but it took all day to get there on the train. I thought we were going to some distant place.
Where did you go on holiday?
It was always Skegness or Chapel St. Leonard's for us. In a caravan or (luxury!) chalet.
Rhyl. At the same time as the rest of our estate. rolleyes
You'd walk down the prom, and all your neighbours were there too- it was just like being at home, with seagulls confused
I only had one holiday in my childhood and that was in a caravan at Bognor Regis ... bucket .. spade .. cossie ... ice cream .. that was it.
Mind you it was a lovely week and I did enjoy myself.
They had a club, people could go to at night and I remember wanting to dance, but mum and dad telling me I couldn't as I was too young.
Of course that didn't stop me one bit
I told mum I was going to the toilet, went the band had stopped playing for a while. I went up to them and asked them to play something for me so I could dance. I had a nice lace blue and white polka dot dress on so being all of 7 yrs old and very precocious they agreed. I danced all around the ball room and got thunderous applause from everyone, except mum who tanned my hide after for telling lies and tricking her to get my own way redface surprisedops:

CORNWALL!! from about the age of 5 and it's how I met Stormy. We stayed at his parents B&B when I was 5 and I have loved him ever since. He caught a slow worm and I thought that was totally awesome rolleyes he was my hero from that minute on.
We also camped in Cumbria & Wales. They were great holidays.

That is sooo lovely, it's made this old cynics day! kiss
East Runton near Cromer, Norfolk. Probably explains why I now live by the sea! lol
Ooooh my Mum's going there soon
Only went on one family holiday as a child - Broadstairs (Kent I think!).
Don't really remember that much of it as I was quite young.

Ooh, that's my fave place to go for a run (well, the flat bits are rolleyes )
Now I know why I like it so much!
i have been lucky with my holidays as a child and went abroad quite a few times Morocco and Sardinia (where i got seriousley burnt legs) redface even had a french exchange when i was 13 and spent a month in Nice lovely family had a fantastic time shame the boy i did the excahnge with who was 3 yrs older than me was such a wimp and a cry baby.
But my fondest memories were in this country at my nans 3 or more times a year by the sea in Harwich and the times we went on holiday on a narrowboat, been on them since and just love the iydillic slow cruise so so need to go on a cruise again.
Trecco Bay in Porthcawl confused The same caravan EVERY year ( yawn ) and it still had the old gas lamps, no running water or toilet and it was freezing at night! The seagulls used to wake you up at 5am every morning clattering across the metal roof mad
That place was and still is the pits :?
I remember when i was younger i used to go to the new forest and stay at a place called ladycross every year to stay in one of the cottages. I think we stayed in all of them at least once. I remember going on alot of bike rides, i had a spectacular crash one year and actually dented my head! I was lucky enough to go abroad one i was younger though.
I was grateful I was in a caravan in East Runton. Have many fond memories of passionate nights in the campsite as well! lol
Oh yes very posh - though we didn't have an inside toilet redface
I remember when i was 11 i went on a french exchange. Me and one boy didnt wear sunscreen, we got sunburnt so bad that we had HUGE blisters on our shoulders.....lovelly
Always Dawlish Warren, Devon, but still not bored with it...going back to camp next week!
As a kid we always holiday'd with the rest of the family, aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents. And have so many fond memories including - sisters first steps, first stitches (in my knee from falling over) and probably my most embarrassing memory - first time drunk...and being found on the beach with no recollection of how i got there redface
You just cant beat camping!!!

For me (Mr SRNE) it was Primrose Valley in North Yorkshire, staying in a chalet or if my grandad was skint, a caravan.
Iv traveled all over the world since but theres nowhere that holds fonder memories for me than good ol' Primrose Valley. Thinkin about it now i can remember so much funny and lovely stuff we did as a family, brings a lump to my throat redface
We always went the Rhyl (well Towyn) with my grandparents, same caravan, same week every year
Mind you .... we've a caravan now and every year end up in Scarborough (despite promising the kids we'll go eleswhere)
One of my favourite memories of my grandparents is Towyn on a rainy day so can't moan too much LOL. Miss them both so much :inlove:

Not a lot of money around when we were kids so we often went to stay with my Mums sister and husband on their farm which had the added advantage of being by the seaside as well (in NZ)There were 5 kids in my family and my aunt and uncle had 8 kids so it was great as we always had company and got on really well. Remember 1 year we went to a campsite with them for a few days. Someone caught a crab and put it in a bucket under the camp bed. Yes of course it escaped and I didnt sleep again on that holiday in case it crawled into bed with me

We always used to go to Towyn as well. We always stayed on the same caravan site and went to the club at night as well. I loved the fancy dress competition and always entered it - I never won though sad
This thread is bringing back so many good memories biggrin
allways went to St Ives end less sunny days on the golden sand. wish i was there now
