i've had this conversation before and found it interesting. i am of the opinion that class now has nothing to do with money anymore. someone can earn a huge amount of money and be as common as muck, or a person without a penny to their name who has class to exceed anyone.
if it comes to whether you have to work or not...well my family have always worked and so do i. but then my multi-millionair friends also work, they just earn far more money than i do. one of them has made his own way from nothing and is as common as they come and lovely with it. one has come from a family of money, swears like a trooper and has the ability to make very expencive clothing look cheap (her words not mine). i also have one who is from some money and is as stuck up her own arse as you can get thinking she is upper class but really isn't. then there are a couple who come from old money, those i would consider upper class and lovely with it.
education.....i have 7 A* and one B gcses, the equivalent to an nvq 4 in business and finance, 2 degrees, equestrian qualifications coming out of my ears, as well as others for my current job. but one of the people from above that i would think of as upper class left school when he was 14 with nothing.
i've always been called posh and a snob because i've always had horses, i don't really have a northern accent, and i was always known for not swearing (not saying that i don't at all now, but still not alot compaired to some).
personally i don't think that class has anything to do with money, education, what you wear or what accent you have. it's just the person you are and the way you are with other people.

Snob.... wink

Were not talking about class were talking about the class system.
Try getting a good job in the city with a brummie or scouse accent...

wave Scouser here. Oh and one of my relatives (also a Scouser) is one of the Directors of a very important City institution.
His accent has never been a problem.

Quite right too old chap wink
ohhh an interesting subject!!
I had this conversation the other day with my mother...
My mother considers herself working class - due to her upbringing, her father was a joiner. She says my father is from a middleclass/upper middleclass as his father was a bank manager. I think due to circumstances of my upbringing etc I would be classed as middleclass.... There wasnt an option for kinkyclass lol

BIoke yes. can i choose who? poshers.

No. But it will involve me - are we still on? lol
That is nonsense.

Good point...........Is class due to upbringing or money??
e.g. if one was brought up in a working class environment, gets a good education and a good job. Does one then move up to middle class due to the money you earn which allows more luxuries and to move in higher circles. Or would one still class onesself as working class with money??
I read a fascinating book whilst at Uni about Women and Class (written in the 70's). Basically a woman's class status goes up when marrying. If she splits up or divorces her status moves down again. It was also linked to life span - if a guy is married his life span is longer and female's shorter.
All the utility bills were in the males name and you couldn't change it. If a couple were in receipt of benefits - the cheque was made out to the male partner. They were cases where the male spent it and left the family without.
Thank goodness some things change!!! Women are living longer with or without a man lol wink
Some academia believe the underclass exists and would argue these are the ones whose income is kept (those on benefits) just below the poverty line.
Personally - I consider myself as a working class women smile I don't care what anyone else wants to class me as....

now im a trend setter???
out of interest. what is so offensive about "white trash"? sure its a derogatory term for a class of people but not really racist, more descriptive and judgmental. is it any worse than calling someone visually impared a "blind fuck"?

I am all for free speech Brucie but it does not exist on here, as far as racist derogatory words are used.
White trash as a white person I find offensive, because I just do.
IF and it was a big IF you could say what you wanted on here, then I would be fine with it but...people can be racist nowadays but only if you are white so...I have an opportunity now myself to use the race card, and ~" white trash " I am saying is a racist comment.
Cant really be construed as a racist as the definition of white trash is.........
White trash is an American English pejorative term referring to individual or groups of lower social class white skinned people that the speaker considers to lack cultural capital. It is most frequently used as a slur to describe financially, economically or culturally disadvantaged Caucasians

I am what I am. Not upper class, and I do have to work for a living. Well I do if I wish to live the way I do, but the government is very generous now so I could give up working.
No I don't know what class I am. I have gone to dinner parties, award ceremonies ect. My family do own land, but not as much as we did. I think that was the 'royal' we, as I only own my own house.
I used to ride with a barons duaghters. I think it is all meaning less, but then it is not because people insist on labelling me. Most are wrong.
I am me.

Interesting thread - apart from the obvious irrelevancies.
For some time now I have thought that class is all about attitude and how you think rather than how much money you have. I have often been described as 'posh', though I wouldn't necessarily regard myself as that. I DO feel middle class - and I always have, even at school. However, I hope I'm never snobbish. I have friends from all walks of life. I am interested in people for WHO they are not WHAT they are.
I cannot stand rude or offensive people, no matter what background they come from. In my experience, most people are interesting, fun and I am often touched by people's generosity to others. To me, that's what matters - not how they speak, what they wear, where they live etc.

PS Gay and bi men seem to be the ONLY people who check out my profile! rolleyes Am I offended? Nope. Am I flattered? Well, in a way, yes. Perhaps I should think about changing my orientation!
They are not the only ones. I have everdence.

You know, when you posted "I couldn't shag anyone with bad spelling or punctuation." I nearly replied with wave
lol
Being serious, I really like you and the way you post. If I was going to 'broaden my horizons' so to speak, you would be absolutely at the top of my list - and I DO seem to be going in that direction at the moment.
I have to say that this is something of a surprise to myself but, as I have said in another thread, "If I haven't tried it yet, how do I know if I like it or not?"
I am not quite sure what message I am sending here, other than I would like us to keep in touch and, who knows?
