For the first time ever, I've arranged to take my PC to a computer repair shop tomorrow (no, not PC World, thank you), for minor repairs and adjustments, and some advice. I have nothing illegal on it, but I would prefer them not to see things like swinging sites and similar stuff. Apart from deleting the history and temporary internet files, is there anything I can or should do? Or am I worrying about nothing - have they "seen it all" in their time anyway? Any advice will be appreciated.
Mike.
I wouldn't worry about it, they're probably lurking on here right now wink . I had SH on my screen a few months ago when some saleman came round to sell me gas and leccy. Turns out he'd been to Liaisons. Small world :P
Most computer shops (except PC World) are way too busy to ferret through your computer. Unless, of course, you are a celebrity. Then they will look at absolutely everything.
If they need to use the Internet and see something interesting in your History and have time on their hands they may have a look.
If you're paranoid: Copy your Favorites folder (from Documents & Settings) to a floppy then remove your FavoritesDelete everything in your History (Internet Options>Clear History)Delete your Temporary Internet Files (Internet Options>Delete FilesIf you're really paranoid you can delete Cookies as well, not recommended, (Internet Options>Delete Cookies)Finally run a disk clean up:My ComputerRight Click on Local Disk C:Click on PropertiesClick on Disk Clean upClick OK Oh, and follow Cool4catz advice and log out of any forums/web sites that you automatically log into, remembering to make a note of usernames and passwords...
Thanks everyone - I never log on to sites automatically, so no problems there. I'll do a disk clean-up, but maybe not bother deleting cookies. Thanks for reminding me about favourites John, I will copy them then delete a few.
Ta again,
Mike.
Thank you so much John (JQL).
As I have said many times on SH, I have only just started using a PC at home and I wasn't receiving any emails with attachments. I spoke to the IT guy @ work, he gave me several things to try. When none of these seemed to work, he said to unplug it all and take the box into work and he'd fix it. Well I nearly died. Talk about beetroot redface. I said that wouldn't be possible as I didn't know how to do that.
I suggested that he call round, where he could fix the problem in private. I didn't want the whole office in on the sites I look at.
But all thanks to John, I have sorted the problem out. I have cleaned up my history. And also sorted out the attachment problem to boot. Am I getting good or what confused:
These John are just for you kiss

Did you get to shag him hunni? dunno
innocent :whistling: :lol2:
Oh why oh why oh why was this post not up before I was taking my machine in for repair on Monday when I got over zealous with deleting stuff. ?
In deleting something from what I thought was Temp files I've now stopped my NAV from working. mad And in attepting to fix that I seem to have broken my modem and the follow on from that is my PC is now dead.
I'm now so desperate to have it repaired that I don't care if my next door neighbour's father (for tis he who is doing the repair) sees the naked pics of me I have on my desktop  Frankly the links to a swingers site in my favourites are the least of my worries!!!
I use Crap Cleaner. This program cleans your system from temporary and unnecessary files accumulated over time. It also cleans internet explorer's cache, recently used files, browsing history, etc. You can delete everything or select only the items that you want cleaned, and also specify cookies that should not be deleted.
The program is free to use (freeware) and you can get it from
Hope that helps
if every thing is legal on your com then your ok cos all you have done and every where you have been is on there i could find it but most peps are ok
This is the one point where I am glad I am capable of building my own PC's, as I never have to return it to the shop. I just have to keep basic stuff clear (my dad uses the PC) and use hidden files for anything pornographic so he wont stumble across Mrs TnH.
However if I was going to stick it near a shop / work I, paranoid that I am, would prob wipe the HD with a secure delete app, put a clean operating system on, and let them have that. Every year or so I back up everything and rebuild anyway, something like a spring clean of the old PC, only installing just what I need and archiving old stuff to DVD so it would be a good excuse.
Totally over the top for day to day stuff, just follow advice of JQL and you should be fine smile

IIf you're really paranoid you can delete Cookies as well, not recommended, (Internet Options>Delete Cookies)

John,
Can I ask why it's not recommended because we do it on a regular basis? I thought it was safe to do so.
They say you learn something new everyday, well they should pop in to The Cafe because they will learn loads of new things everyday lol
Thanks

If you automatically log on to forums, web sites etc. and have various options set in various website that you visit, this information is held in cookies.
Cookies are an excellent idea and, when used as intended, very useful, unfortunately the unscrupulous have also hijacked them for nefarious purposes. mad
My cookie settings are:Override automatic cookie handlingPrompt for first party cookiesAlways block third party cookiesAlways allow session cookies That way I control who puts cookies on my machine. Can be a bit of a pain though...
How/where do you adjust (is that the correct word) your cookie settings?

My pleasure...
I have a sort of rule. I say sort of 'cos I break it when ever I feel like it.
If a site, when opeining a single page, asks more than twice to put a cookie on my computer it is permanently blocked from putting cookies on the computer. Some site can request 10-15 cookies  What the fuck for?
You can also unblock previously blocked sites by clicking SITES in PRIVACY.

Part from the usual crap-deleters (adaware, spybot and the anti-v) I also run evidence eliminator.
It deletes all the inet ex cookies and loads of other crap as well.
I've never had any trouble with it, and never any trouble with sites that use cookies to sign-in with (ok, so you have to sign in again and be "remembered" on the pc) (small price)
It gets rid of cookies and the temp files, and then overwrites all unused space on the drive.
Let pc world do a glitter on that.
Message for celticq...
May I suggest in a humble fashion that if you send me the pix on your desktop, I'll tell you if they would shock the repair guy?
No??
OK then, biggrin
Dose any one know of a FREE program I can down load so I can send faxes as e mails
