Pardon my ignorance . I've some 'nice' photos to accompany my ad but they are bigger than the 50kb limit . How do i reduce the size of them ?

I choose small pics for my ads - avoids all problems! If you don't want to do that some packages, such as Paintshop Pro have a re-sizing facility - this should work for what you want.
