I think it's over the top. Fireworks used to be an annual treat but now they're so commonplace, used for any occasion, that it's just 'oh, more fireworks'.
Yes I pretty much agree, I didn't go out this New Year's Eve, but Jay still went outside to first foot on the strike of 12. It was quite nice when the fireworks went off on the dot of 12 but to be honest fireworks to me have always been about bonfire night. I could understand them being used in 2000 but not each and every year.
In addition, our neighbours hadn't warned us they were setting them off, we had 2 rockets land in our garden and we have dogs. On Guy Fawkes night I would expect to keep an eye on my dogs going into the garden but not New Year.
Yes it's another rip off. rolleyes
Some bloody idiots set their fireworks off too early on New Year's Eve anyway, on the next road to us rolleyes
Bah Humbug u lot, we love fireworks even though they are used on every occasion now!!
Nice to watch but are a bloody nightmare for the poor animals that get scared witless when crazy people take their dogs out on NYE to watch them, we tried to help find a PUPPY that someone had taken out to an organised firework display at 12 on NYE, we were a little annoyed at the owners irresponsibility to be honest!!

Stupid stupid people! my dogs remain at home on Guy Fawkes and the only place they went to on New Year's Eve was the back garden to pee pee. I agree, some owners want a foot up their jacksie.

A little annoyed !! I`d have stuck a rocket up their arses !! lol
The girl was so devastated that I refrained from giving the type of tirade of cliches that i would normally have dished out. We started looking at just after 12, and stayed till half 2 looking but to no avail, it was on a massive cliff edge in North Yorkshire too!!
Apparently the pup (only 11 months old)had slipped its lead when the fireworks started rolleyes
We have 7 cats, they can come and go as they please through a cat-flap and are all wanderers who simply use us to prvide heat and food... ahhh but we love 'em!
It seems since New Year 2000 that its become a thing to have fireworks on New Years eve... as pointed out for pet owners this means having to stay in to keep your pet company and reassure them that the world isn't about to crash down upon them, for us it simply means making sure all the cats are in the house, they don't get bothered by them most of the time, unless its the huge noisy rockets, but again if they're inside with us they just curl up a little closer than normal.
I don't overly mind... I love fireworks, and I chose to have the responsibility and therefore sometimes constraint of owning a pet... BUT I do hate the fact that it now seems that we get no peace from about 3 weeks before bonfire night until about a week after New Year... nearly 3 months out of every year where if we had a nervous pet that needed sedation we would have to stay at home and have that medicine on hand? Grrrrr... inconsiderate and un-needed...
The two weeks surrounding bonfire night and then New Years is enough... I'd support a white paper making it illegal to set fireworks off outside of these dates!

Interesting really that my original idea was that this thread was supposed to discuss what we thought about the "waste" side of things !!
But it`s turned into an animal welfare thread !! rotflmao
How jolly English of us !! lol

actually... gotta admit.. when you see a single rocket on sale for £40 + for a 10 second display you do wonder why... I can think of MANY more enjoyable things to spend £40 on... AND they generally (ahem) last longer!!!
Where I live fireworks are the bane of my life. Starting from about October, or sometimes before, there are fireworks at least on a weekly basis if not more. We seem to celebrate the sun going down with fireworks. Diwali, Eid, Guy Fawkes, New Year, weddings, funerals, bahmitzvahs you name it we have fireworks being let off. Makes me laugh when they say keep your animals in for bonfire night. Our poor cat would be in every night at that rate.I wish someone could tell me why there were fireworks being let off last weekend? Was it for not new year celebration? A waste of money? Of course it is, but as these fireworks are bought by private individuals then its not public money. However what does annoy me is the noise pollution and air pollution. Living on the flight path for Heathrow should be enough, but no we also have to live in an area with a high ethnic population where fireworks are the chosen form of celebration. Am I mad about it? Damn right I am mad
The extremely brief fireworks in Newcastle were lovely!
Some mainland continental countries have always celebrated the incoming year with fireworks and I have thoroughly enjoyed them for many a year.
The Guy Fawkes thing is always a bit bizarre - the celebration of a FAILED attempt to overthrow the government in 1605??? And we think we're progressive??
Traditions in this country are just plain weird!
lol
Love firworks. The bigger the better and if people want to set em off near me (but not quite at me lol) thats cool. I like the idea of them as a celebration.
As for waste. I'd prefer to think about things such as plastic carrier bags. And pollution, well in my biased uneducated opinion. far too much is made of it.
I mean landfill. Whats that all about, whats so wrong with waste and dumping it? Half the world is sinking so why noy landfill those places out of water. Just make the waste compact and as inert as possible and ship it out. biggrin Makes sense to me.

Ah well that explains why you were in the area... :silly:
Glasgow.. tut rolleyes wink
The fireworks on holiday left a lot to be desired, hand held and let off near people, fire cracker rolls being tied to lampposts / street signs or just laid out on the road (which is still open to traffic) and let off.... rolleyes
I am really suprised that no one was badly hurt.
However the peace lamps that when up into the sky at about were wonderful.
i think they should be kept for bonfire night
you can have to much of a good thing wink
and on the pet point of view our dog is not afraid of them at all we take her to the display every year she does not even flinch and laps up all the attention but on the other hand we also take precautions just in case (tighten the collar, have her favourite treats to tempt her if anything was to happen)it never has!

ditto...... my dog loves em.
the first time he saw them was in november when the local group of hoodies were setting them off in the park over the road. one of the lads was holding a tube that was spitting out hot bangs and sparks. i went over to watch and see if he was gonna hurt himself.... phone camera switched on incase i could get some good footage and my dog went upto the group and ran of with their bag of fireworks.
ive got it on film............. funny as hell.
non of them had the bottle to try and get it off him.
laugh............... i nearly shat it was so funny.
Anyhow.............. what id say in reply to the orig post is that they make a good spectacle. so... if you have something to celebrate, its done safely and respectfully........... why not.

Good comments. I believe that on Bonfire night there should only be organised displays anyway. On an organised display it is as safe as fireworks can be. and you get a much better display. Cannot understand letting off fireworks in your back garden with all the dangers that entails!!
As for New Years Eve, am undecided. Don't get me wrong I love fireworks, but shops still sell them to underage kids who let them off early Oct until Bonfire Night, which is a bloody nuisance. If there was only organised displays and the sale of fireworks made illegal to the general public, then you would not have any of the problems you currently have. I sound like a killjoy, but they are dangerous in the wrong hands, and doubt very much if the fireworks being let off before bonfire night, are being let off by adults. The display in London was superb and am all for letting that continue, as for the enviroment am sure it can stand a firework display in London, without doing further damage, if any is being done at all anyway!

Absolutely loved the fireworks on New Year!
We went to a spot in Bristol and gazed out over the city as midnight struck. What a beautiful sight.......lots of fireworks erupting at the same time............it was fantastic
