I have a phobia of the dentist, which is why I have left my toothache go on for weeks without visiting the Dentist. I attended a consultation last Friday, which left me with the shakes, stomach cramps, nausea and insomnia. The result is I have to have an extraction (with the aid of conscious sedation) and I have exactly 9 sleeps to overcome my fear before my appointment, otherwise I will bolt .
Yes I know I am 30-something year old grown up with two children, but I am petrified redface .
Any suggestions peeps?
It's a very real fear is this and unlike most others which you can avoid, you have to visit the dentist regularly. Have a word with your dentist and tell them of your fears. They're used to it and know how to deal with it. My ex used to be terrified and he had to have so much work done, he had to go to the dental hospital in the end. They gave him Temazepam ( a relaxant ) to help calm his nerves and did the work under general anaesthetic.
If yours will give you something to relax you beforehand, you must have someone with you to get you home safe.
There's other methods to help with this phobia too. Have you tried acunpuncture? It does work for some people.
Remember, it's only half hour ( tops ) out of your day and imagine how good you'll feel when it's over
Good luck
Thanks Sassy-Seren for your comments. During my consultation with the Dentist, they apparently sedate you to a level where you are at ease, but I also have a needle phobia too, which just adds to my stress. The only other alternative is waiting a year for a NHS hospital appointment, but would have to suffer the nagging toothache until then redface
Sob sob.

 Alex
I can so sympathise with the needle phobia as I've got the same :scared: which doesn't help being a nurse rolleyes
If it's the sight of the needle, do as I do and just close your eyes as soon as you sit in the chair and don't open them again until dentist says rinse.
If it's the actual jab then ask dentist to use a local on your gums first, that works too.
*note to dentists*.......it's NOT a sharp scratch ! :giggle:

Haven't seen one in 25 years..... sends shivers down my spine just at the very thought of it!
But you did od course hear the one about the young lady who visited the dentist and told him that she would prefer to have a baby... Dentist asked her to be quick in making her mind up so that he could adjust the chair!!

Along with your previously unfinished research of psychoanalytical behaviour analysis, specifically male gender, of selective hand usage, in masturbation techniques and their dominating writing hand, you will be a very busy man!!!!! :giggle:

Midazolam is a relaxant which should help to calm you down before you go in. Make sure you have someone to take you home though
You'll be fine hunni. kiss I've got to register with a new dentist on Thursday so I'll be the same as you. :therethere:

Midazolam is a benzodiazepine, it acts in a similar way to diazepam, nitrazepam, temazepam, etc. It's used for conscious sedation because a) It's water-soluble and b) it wears off very quickly.
I've had to go along and be a 'responsible person' when Mrs. DP's had this done (she needs to be sedated for all dental treatment, including checkups, 'cos of her movement disorder), and it doesn't seem that bad, unless like me you're not keen on the idea of being sedated (the only person I trust to medicate me, is me smile).

In the meantime to help with your pain you can rub some oil of cloves on the poorly tooth. Only a little bit mind as it tastes horrid but you soon get used to it. Again perfectly safe and you can get it at a local chemist. Really works too, numbs the sore bits!

Ooohh errrr, for some reason I do have a thing for oil of cloves. Possibly I just have odd taste buds confused
Alex i do sympathise, i have exactly the same fear and its been years since ive been to the dentist cos this fear. As was mentioned before, try the Rescue Remedy, i use it when im stressed or worried and it does seem to calm me down.
Good luck hun, your a braver woman than i am!!
Suze xx
I think I'll try some of that Rescue Remedy stuff confused I'll let you know Thursday if it worked wink

If you have a decent doctor...get an appointment quick and ask them for some valium....thats what I do. Pop 2 and you won't care what your dentist wants to do..
If you do decide to try rescue remedy, buy it from somewhere with an instore pharmacist, and ask them about it first. Some herbal remedies can have drug-drug interactions and it may not me suitable to have in your system at the same time as the dental relaxant. Also if you go to the GP for Valium as suggested above, make sure you inform them that it is to be taken in conjunction with the drug you mentioned earlier, as again the two drugs may not be suitable to be taken together.

Valium (diazepam) will definitely interact with midazolam, though I'm not entirely sure what would happen. dunno They both act on the same receptors, so either the diazepam will potentiate the effects of midazolam (not good), or competition for receptor sites will result in the diazepam inhibiting the effects of midazolam (also not good).

I also have a real bad phobia of dentist's so i can relate to what your saying
I have stuck tooth ache for months because of it...
I have found a way of numbing my whole mouth so its completely dead before i go in now though so i can't even feel the needles or nothing at all so it makes it a little easier just knowing there won't be no pain biggrin
Tony wink
Mate,
I hadn't been at the dentist for a number of years till a couple of years ago. To be honest the worst part of dentistry is the anxiety you're going through right now.
If you look at the Yellow Pages you will see dentists who advertise that they are understanding of phobic patients. You're well advised to go to one of these as they will treat you in line with the stress you're suffering.
The best thing you can do is agree what needs to be done and get him/her to do the simple stuff first thus building your confidence. You can also try the numbing gel which will take the scratch away from the injection.
Like any phobia, the actual is not nearly as bad as the anxiety and I promise this won't be a fraction as bad as you think.
You might find that Midazolam is more often used during dental procedures as it has a better amnaesic effect than Diazepam.
As for Rescue Remedy, I bought some today and there is no warning in the enclosed leaflet about taking it with other medication though if it does conflict I think it's more the alcohol ( 27% ) in it than the herbs confused
tastes fecking great !
I have used the Bach flower remedies (maybe the same as rescue remedies mentioned ?? ) to ease my discomfort with flying. It has worked for me on the occasions where I have had to fly..but I have never tried it to calm my dental visits. Probably because I have 'extreme dental phobia'
The last dentist I visited successfully didn't even get to look into my mouth until the 3rd visit because I was so hysterical redface confused
I also have a phobia of needles so was a bit wary of the sedation offered, but I have to say that once the drug ( have no idea what it was) was in my system, I was fine. They could have danced the high jig in my mouth and I wouldn't have cared. I was totally awake for the fillings but sooo relaxed that I didn't care :?
As a remedy for toothache I would suggest *ahem* using a piece of bread or (if you can stand it *shudder* cotton wool) soaked in whisky and held/left against the gum in question. It does make the skin a bit more tender short-term but I found it helped even with wisdom teeth :? I imagine this works in a similar way to clove oil but I can't stand the taste/smell of cloves...
Pain killers such as Ibuprofen are also recommended (due to the anti-inflamatory agent) I don't know what it is called but I was once a dental receptionist, so my info is not duff ;) and I personally would recommend a pain killer called Veganin as I have had bouts of neuralgia and this was the only thing that eased it.
*Please read all documentation/consult GP as I am not medically qualified and only speak from personal experience*
