What`s the rules on diminutives ??

Surely if you're going to shorten anyone's name the polite thing to do (is that what you mean by rule?) would be to check if they were okay with it?
If I'm in chat and someone chats to me then I may shorten their name if it was something extremely long - but for me that is a matter of expediency; if I kept having to type the full thing I would quickly get behind and lose the flow of the chat.
I shorten my own SH 'name' because I'm a lazy typer!

Doesnt happen to me often, Ben seems to suffice in chat and forums. People with low self esteem litter their conversation and posts with unsolicited demeaning diminutives. Its a manifestation of psychomacoligical pathologies or sumfink.
