Discussion groups

Has anyone had any experience of these groups before? Have you organised one? I've read a little about them but there's not a great deal of info to be found.
I'm just looking for some hints or tips for starting one in my local area - something for all age groups, social/economics backgrounds and cultures to get involved in - but primarily for singles. I'm NOT thinking of it as a dating group, just somewhere for single people to meet up and hopefully, have some good discussions and chats along the way. It's difficult for singles to keep up with a social life when all their friends have family commitments so my thinking was, why not an informal place that openly invites people on their own to pop along and meet new people without the fear of sticking out like a sore thumb?
If there was something like this in your area, would you go along?

I used to be part of a book club that met monthly. We met in a local pub, early evening and chatted about the book we'd chosen for that month. Book chat out of the way and next book nominated and agreed and it became more a general discussion forum.
I loved it.

I can imagine it being of interest to quite a lot of people but it would need some sort of focus - something along the lines of Nola's book group.
Lots of rules to set as well I guess.
Would I go to one? I don't think I've been a single long enough to be able to answer that one.
