Do I need a financial advisor?

Has anyone got any knowledge about financial advisors?
I need to talk to someone about a situation I'm in, but I need someone who will look at all my finances and give me actual advice, rather than try to sell me something - it may turn out that I might buy a product they recommend, but in the first instance I need advice.
I believe that financial advisors get paid by the commission on whatever they sell, but I need to find someone who doesn't want to sell me anything - so is a financial advisor the right person?
Is there another type of person that would be better suited, someone who I would pay for the consulting time, rather like a counsellor, seeing as I'm not looking to buy anything?
Hi Cherry, make an appointment at your local Citizens Advice Bureau, best luck Cherry xxxxxx
Have you tried the Citizen's Advice Beaureux (sp?), or I think there are advisors who charge for their time and don't work on commission.

If its something for a new business, you maybe be able to get free good advice from your local small business advisers. We have one in Bristol called Brave (I get a great free on-line newsletter from mine). They do courses in managing your budget, how to keep books, business plans etc. etc. other courses/advice available for a cost just depends on what you want and your circumstances are.
Have a look on your local government website, most usually have groups they support/fund or recommend to people who need advice. Alternatively, check out what's available in the voluntary sector. Sometimes a group exists that gives help to people via the phone, internet or appointment.
They may also be discussion groups on-line that gives the information you need... just a case of hunting around for it. Have you tried money expert? They have loads of different sections where you can ask for advice in the forum.
Not sure if the above is any help confused :? Way to early in the day for me to think clearly lol
Good luck..

just sent you a pm hun... but certain things people may want to consider...
not all financial advisors work on commission, a lot of them work of set fees or a mixture of both fees and comission.....
I have an independant financial advisor, the same one my mum does because she trusts her implicitly.... have you tried talking to other people because word of mouth is one of the better recomendations in regards to IFA's
You may find an accountant of more use. You pay them for their time, and their job is purely to look at the numbers.
Financial advisors are really glorified sales people who specialize in financial services.
You can either look through your local yellow pages, or if possible by recommendation from someone who has used such a service.
Hope that helps.

Hi Cherry,
Totally agree with what Fabio has just said.
Not all charge an upfront fee, if they do steer clean away from them.
I have sent a pm, hope it helps!
Good luck
Many banks have financial advisors and although they may be biased towards their own products it could give you a few ideas..
Hello,
Just sent you a PM, no a pm, not a Prime Minister! Hope it helps though I am just guessing at the problems so if it needs more help just let me know?
Shay
Thanks all, and thanks for the pms, lots to think about
