Because I work in a multi-cultural situation (training centre for a British/international company) we are not allowed to put up Christmas decorations.
Now, tell me if I'm wrong, but doesn't that make it a NON-cultural situation? Wouldn't MULTI-cultural mean we celebrate a nice selection of happy events from many cultures.
Personally - I say stuff 'em. I put a nice string of tinsel around my desk and I'll defend it to the last breath (or until I get threatened with a disciplinary).

Maybe a quite word with your local paper to name them. Or maybe it could be to do with health and safety issues? dunno
It's an office, rather than a factory, so HS&E really doesn't come into it. But then they did try to take my craft knife away (I use it for sharpening my pencils) in case I hurt myself. FFS!!!!!!! I'm 44!!!!!!!!!

I bet we know the kind of people from this council who want to ban it, and they are NOT from another faith other than being Christian and most def white. Why do they continue to stir up trouble? Or do they have some kind of hidden agenda here?
Who are they trying to protect? Because all faiths that I know love the whole Christmas thing, so I would like to see the people it is " supposed " to offend.

i think you are somwewhat right...
I have a theory that those printing such urban myths are infact trying to stir up "racial disharmony".

I agree with you both here!
Dee I agree with your theory!
What is printed is what some believe and then thoughts fester.
Media I believe plants the seeds when enough seeds are planted large oak trees grow.
When are people going to realise that media has the power to brainwash?
This is my opinion only.
What I think is needed is for the Christians to start implementing a policy, then let's see who wants to fuck with Christmas!

I don't think you realise a fatwa is not binding. Often it is the view of a cleric etc and often it the stupid fatwa's that get the publicity not the sensible ones.
So thats for some kind of muslims, what would you do for the others kinds and other religions?

not to sound racist, i'm not in anyway because i'm happy for whomever to live here. but for crying out loud; i wouldn't go to live in another country and expect them to change what they believe in or celebrate! if we offend you so much stay in your own country or move somewhere that suits your needs better!

Funny what you put.... some people do not necessarily come from other countries that don't want christmas or don't celebrate christmas, believe in creation, have differing religons, etc. So what would you do with the people born here thrown them out?
What you put does sound racist.

Yes I know that fatwas don't mean squat over here, I also know that what I wrote was a joke! rolleyes
Additionally it's not the fatwa to be afraid of, it's the unhinged nutter who believes in it.

No it doesn't. It sounds common-sense to me, unless you can identify the race being referred to.
I don't go to a restaurant that serves food I don't like and would have to order. Similarly why go to a country that offends you so much. unless of course one likes to be offended. Unfortunately a lot of people in ethnic minorities seem to like to be offended at every opportunity just so they can piss and moan. Perhaps it's a cry for attention?
I don't know that I don't 'believe' in crimble. I think it is a marketing ploy like any other, 'mother's day' ummm valentines day etc etc.
Whatever religious meaning it may have has no bearing on my life.. I will be spending the 25th of December off work and pottering around the house, much the same as I do any other time when I have the house to myself.
As for other people they can do what they want.
and, yes, if I had my way then it wouldn't be happening as I believe it is a good way for the media and marketing companies to really draw a firm line between the haves and the have nots. I resent the amount of my money that goes on the lights in the local towns. I resent the amount of people that are homeless too. I resent the amount of meat that people eat. I resent a lot of things really..
and I was born 'here' too. I am also white and I do a lot of work with the BME community locally, amongst others and I can tell you that most of the non-'christian' community couldn't give two figs what others are doing with their celebratory occasions. So it isn't about religion either for or against (for the most part)or political correctness.

when you take about ethnic minorities and race, what do you mean people of a colour, asain, etc because the way I look at it you can be any colour or race to follow any religion or beliefs. Extreme generalising on your part. Why not considered the people born here with white origins following an religion that doesn;t celebrate xmas.

to answer you question zeddies:
to be racist is to discriminate against another race and their beliefs and or principles/traditions. therefore those who are offended by ours and want to ban our traditions, stifle our beliefs and set against our principles are the ones who are being racist.
i don't believe i have actually done that have i?
you see i really couldn't care less what anyone else believes in or celebrates. i don't have regard for any religion what so ever. however, what i do have is a healthy respect for those who do. i respect their right to choice and to carry out their own choices in their own way. what i expect in return is exactly the same. if they don't like what other people do they should shut up and put up with it the same as i do with them.
those who are born here are brought up knowing what this country celebrates. so for me personally if they don't like it tough! christmas for me has nothing what-so-ever to do with jesus. if that offends people i don't care. it's my opinion and i have as much right to it as anyone else has to theirs. but i am not about to go running through the street telling everyone else that they should wake up and smell the coffee, there is no god.......blah blah blah.....
everyone has a right to their own opinion and this country, for whatever reason, has celebrated christmas for donkies years. why should millions be deprived of something for the sake of a handfull of people who would not give up their own beliefs and traditions if we said so?
whips
But are you not discrimating against other beliefs of not celebrating xmas, and xmas is about Jesus.
Happy biffday jesus and roll on xmas, cant w8 2 c wot pressies i get lol
Religion and politics are two things i wont discuss cos we all av our own beliefs and wots the point in trying to get someone to change their points of view it dont work.
Whether or not Jesus actually existed (not an issue I feel qualified to judge) - his birthday was chosen to coincide and therefore make use of and eventually replace the midwinter celebration of the pagans. That was set to be the point where the winter started to turn - when the days started to get longer.
The turn of the year is the 21st December, and therefore that should be Christmas Day too. New Year's Day should also be the 21st or else the 22nd (to be the first day that is longer than the last).
The problem with this? We lose a whole weekend of drinking, family stuff and jollity and probably at least 3 days off work.
What I'm calling for is that our break from work starts on the 20th December. We have a real old party with loads of food, candles and fireworks on the 21st. Then we have Christmas with our loved ones family etc. Then we recover for a few days and restock the fridge and drinks cupboard before launching ourselves into the 'modern' New year on 31st. Eventually dragging ourselves back to work about the 5th or 6th January.
Do you reckon I could run for Prime Minister on that ticket? :giggle: :giggle: :giggle: :giggle:

Do I really have to define "ethnic minority" for you? It's a commonly used phrase that most people understand.
No I don't believe it's generalising full stop, let alone extremely. There are very few, if any white people with religions that don't celebrate Christmas who speak out about how offended they are by Christmas.
The point I was making, which seems totally lost on you, is that certain people, most commonly people who have religions and customs that have been imported into the UK, who always seem to be offended about something or other. For example, the moslem women doing an impression of Batman get the hump and are offended if they are told to take off their ridiculous garb due to security concerns. People were outraged and offended by a Danish cartoon, people were offended when they were told they had to take off their headgear whilst riding a motorcycle. Certain people just love it and look for reasons to be offended if for no other reason than the simple fact it gets them noticed.
It's customary for visitors to a country to follow the rules and traditions of the country they are in... with the exception it seems of the UK. Over here it's the Brits that have to change their customs and traditions in case we offend the visitors.
In a nutshell Peanut thinks it's fucking ridiculous.

As you seem to be so well read on the subject, I think you may be able to enlighten me, regarding muslim women they wearing the burqa. I thought that it has little to do with religion more to do with the cultural background or am I wrong.
Who was offended by the cartoon? wasn't it a small minority or are you just generalising again, are they muslims?
Which people were offended when they were told they had to take off their headgear whilst riding a motorcycle? or is that a generalisation again, are they muslims? Least make yourself a bit clearer.
There did seem a hell of a lot demonstrating in London over the cartoons, If my memory serves me right there was someone wearing a certain jacket, for which he was arrested for.

Well you answer it well, it is not all muslims but a minority of them, I think if all the muslim's decended on London you would have alot more there. Sadly alot of people take what a minority do or think and believe it must be all of them thinking the same.
The burqa is a custom of certain culturals nothing to do with Islam. The headgear was nothing to do with Islam was to do with Rastafarianism and Sikhism.
All apart of Islamophobia, not one of you mentioned, any other religion, oh it's the muslims again lol, not celebrating xmas. We some muslims do, only they consider it the birth of one of the important prophets and not the son of god.

Excellent you've got it right he is called Isa, which comes from a change in Aramaic. Classified as Jesus, the son of Mary in Islam, Isa is a messenger of God who had been sent to guide the Children of Israel (banī isrā'īl) with a new scripture, the Injīl (gospel).
