What with the government talking about banning smacking.
Now with ways to put in place what the thread above states.
Isn’t this just another knock at parents saying we are unfit to parent?
Why don’t we just sit back and make the government accountable for our children’s actions seems that what they would like.
Do we not have the right to parent how we see fit?
I believe we should have the right and be accountable as parents. After all we are adults and once you have a child they are your responsibility. Not the responsibility of the state, school or anyone else.
If you can’t parent a child and want that responsibility to keep them safe and cared for you shouldn’t have children.
Children need to know what to look out for on the internet. I think it is like being street wise, you have to teach them to be computer wise too. Teach them about the risk so that they can avoid them, tell them what to look out for and call an adult if unsure a bit like on the streets if in trouble teach them ways to deal with it.
We can not wrap our kids up in cotton wool it’s gone to far for that.
What they should have done is seen the way things were going years ago, not now try to shut the gate after the horses have bolted.
I quite agree.
Daughter has a computer in her bedroom and we check it regularly and once found sites for naked boys had been searched for. After a serious chat, it was sorted.
As a parent, I feel it is up to me to ensure my child knows what is allowed and what isn't. Luckily my daughter has enough "nounce" to understand that when we say the computer will be removed if anything else happens, it will.

Yes I think some parents cannot parent.
Parents and...responsibility. That should be the aim of ALL parents towards their kids.
It's a sad fact that those two words for some people, should not be in the same sentence.
Just as an example of what some parents are like out there.....tip of an iceburg perhaps......Karen Mathews and the Mother of baby P.
Isolated parenting skills? The other end of the scale for crap parents, but a lot not that far behind those two.
Yes most are great parents who put their kids first, but an alarming ammount and increasing are just people who have had kids, but do not give a toss about them.
A sad fact and the Karen Mathews of this world, the drunken layabout who did not care about them, other than the money it brought in, is on the increase.
Thank goodness most are the complete opposite and are great parents in the main.

I agree. Just as some people should never be allowed to drive a car. Parenting is a skill, most of us start from no experience (since families are smaller and we don't get to practice on younger siblings) but we 'get it' gradually. Some simply never do. And some are too selfish to be effective parents even if they do know the skills.
A utopian world would be one where people got loads of experience before they got their own kids, and some never got them if they showed such a bad lack of care and selflessness that is required as a parent.
But we can barely control who owns (and fails to properly care for) a dog, let alone have kids.
Some may say that having kids is a right and no-one should get to interfere. But I would disagree, getting pregnant (for many) is as easy and unthinking as stubbing a toe. It doesn't make it a 'right' - just easy. As to who gets to make those choices - I have no idea. I doubt there is an organisation that could justifiably make those choices.
But as a society we must do what we can to protect and nurture all the children.
I think any parent who thinks the only way to teach their child, is to hit them .......... shouldnt be a parent.
I know this will make me unpopular but I don't care tonight! drinkies

there is a thin line that determine how we progress as a race. there is obviously a control issue here. Some may say that it is a good thing that maybe some people should not have children - the problem comes with where these boundaries stop and who decides that? Not a position i'd like to be put in. I'm a coward i guess.
I can see the want/need to stop some becoming parents but a little alarm bell is ringsdeep down inside when I here/read such things. This type of alarm bell tolls with the sound of population control and manipulation.
I think that society should be aware of such problems and be ready to step in and help/sort things out but as too being able to stop people being parents. I would never fully accept that.

I think a lot of younger generation parents are lazy, self centred and selfish, whose lifes are ruined and ruled by the need for another joint or worse.
In my opinion, these parents are only parents because they were too lazy, self centred and selfish to use a condom.
Hope that makes sense??

Yes it makes sense. I would add that being a rubbish parent is not a new phenomenon.

Lost I agree, after all who would decide who is or isn't a good parent?
I believe there are a lot of people doing their best to be good parents, we are not given manuals on how to be the perfect parent and I don't for one think perfect parenting exists, we all learn the best way we can and each child is an individual and needs different things from parents.
But I do detest when the government seems to think they could make better parents than letting us get on with it.
They never seem to acknowledge that some of us also are producing some good kids in society that have the fundamental basis in place to be good citizens.
As we know from the past ie Children’s act as example it never stops bad parents being parents, but puts obstacles in the way of all parents that are trying to their best.
I do believe the internet needs looking into but to say adults then will not be able to accesses internet sites that are there for people over the age of 18 to me is totally wrong.
I am an adult I should be able to access sites like this as it part of my fun and enjoyment, I don’t believe children should have access but then controls are in place for that.
We all know there is a lot on the internet that should never be there, that is what needs to be looked at surely.
Am sure Sean Mercers parents were superb role models?
Google it for those that do not know who he is, won't be so tough now though when the REAL hard guys get to him.
