Don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking Star Wars etc, I'm just saying it's a different genre from what I regard as science fiction. Where's the "science" in a light saber? Did they explain how it works? That's the difference.
Ice

Ermmmm...yes they did, the Star Wars universe is actually full of such detail and explanation (just ask my cousin, he will cure your insomnia for you if you suffer with it..lol biggrin )
Fiction in science surely does not have to rely on explaining or proving your ideas/theories etc...ok people like Arthur C Clarke predicted things like the development of the satellite through their fiction writings, but surely any fiction that involves a science, explained or unexplained, is technically science fiction and therefore welcome in the genre. I hate to label things and place them in neat little boxes, bring one, bring all, and lets open up the genre as wide as possible, cos we just might benefit from it!
May the Force be With You
Live Long and Prosper
Would you like a Jelly Baby?
I would do Betty, but I would be thinking of Wilma!
LOL LOL LOL LOL
Hmmmmm, I love being in the presence of such intelliegnt people who spend their evenings debating the good and bad points of popular science fiction lol
Now - here's a blast from the past - who remembers Buck Rogers - now please don't tell me that you think that's Sci Fi rotflmao - sorry just lowered the tone of an intelliegnt debate (again redface rolleyes wink )
Buck Rogers and the 21 Century??? Nope!!
I remember:
Dr Who
Quatermass
Adam Adamant

OK, perhaps I'm guilty of a teeny bit of intellectual snobbery here. There's sci-fi that makes me think, and sci-fi that doesn't, but I enjoy it all.
Re: Jelly babies.. can I have a black one, Doctor? (Go on, ask me if I think Dr Who is real sci-fi, lol)
blue but did you you not just like the white lycra suits.... I loved the lady you no doubt enjoyed the guy....
MMMMMMM

I'm afraid you have to concede that Buck Rogers is science fiction... the particular science in question being cryogenic suspension. It was crap, but it *was* sci-fi.
Ice
GMan - come on, do you seriously think I fancy men in white lycra? I don't think so
Now, speaking of Androids - I lurrrrrrrrrrve DATA, he soooooooooo coooooooool - aw, but they killed him off in the last Star Trek movie

My friend Davros assures me that it is. smile
Do androids dream of electric sheep?

It'll happen won't it... kinky robots.
As it happens I love the book but have never managed to stay awake throughout the film.

To me, they're just cowboys and indians with spaceships instead of horses. The idea that you can take a run-of-the-mill Good vs Evil story, set it in the future or outer space

Just got an angry E mail from the Native American Peoples Alliance Party Management (NAPALM) re your comparison of Good Vs Evil and Cowboys and Indians...
(1) they are native American Peoples and will you please remember that
(2) who were they goodies and baddies....those who stole the land (and killed and tortured to do so..) or those who defended their homes?
(3) Will we get Dr. Who repeats on NBC soon?
biggrin :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

They also killed him off in the TNG episode "Time's Arrow", but that didn't stop him smile
I think the Data character is a true masterpiece of acting: For 7 years we just took him for granted as another member of the crew, but if you watch the first and last episodes back to back, you realise that the character was developing the whole time, becoming more and more human so gradually you didn't even notice it was happening. I've hated Brent Spiner in every other role I've seen him in, but that was just a fantastic performance.

I'm so glad I read 2001 before I saw the film. If I had seen the film first I wouldn't have understood it and wouldn't have bothered with the book. But the book was given to me as a present and it's that book that introduced me to sci-fi.
There has only ever been one film which was exactly what I expected after reading the book, and that was Silence Of The Lambs. The sequel is the worst film I have ever seen in my life.
Mine's a Chateauneuf, ta very much. biggrin

Data *is* serious sci-fi, honest. biggrin
Anyway, even if you don't think it is, I still think it was an incredible piece of acting.

Someone once wrote:
The difference between fact and fiction? Fiction has to make sense wink
Oh Bugga...you are right...I noticed a few others too...
Tony Blair and his Government
Michael Howard and HM Opposition
Charles Kennedy and the Bermuda Triangle (aks Lib Dems)
The Sun newspaper journo's
.....the list is too long...there is no sci-fi...just our ignorance at the Big Brother mainframe ( or is that just shit reality tv?...err,mm...YES!!)
I feel like I am an extra in THX1138 or Clockwork Orange...HELP HELP.... (said Penelope Pitstop).....
Oh No....Jenny Agutter has just turned the corner with Buck.......is it all a dream?????

I'm a bit of a purist... I take my science fiction very seriously and don't regard Star Wars, Farscape etc as genuine science fiction. To me, they're just cowboys and indians with spaceships instead of horses. The idea that you can take a run-of-the-mill Good vs Evil story, set it in the future or outer space, add on some SFX and call it sci-fi is a sham AFAIAC. The spaceship is not enough... I want to know how it works!
I take the opposite view, the sci-fi I enjoy takes the opportunity to challenge the observers perception of right and wrong in an environment that does not become cluttered with pre-conceptions. I really do not want to spend half an episode listening to how a warp drive works, it is enough to accept that for the purposes of the story, space ships can travel really really really quickly and not be torn apart by space dust. Sci Fi to me is great because it allows the exploration of moral and ethical issues in a non-threatening environment.
StarGate is brill, DS9 was the first couple of series, then got all wrapped up in the prophets business, then forgot all about that to have a bloody big punch up. And is nobody going to mention B5? Talk about East Wing in space!
I have to say though, my ultimate Sci Fi would be The Martian Chronicles, now that is what I call sci fi! 8)

biggrin :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Probably not, but he's on UKGold right now.
Tom Baker... my fave Doctor :D
Dr Who, ahh yes, the sets where the walls wobbled, daleks got stuck and shot fire extinguishers at people and they still had me running for cover...
The best bit had to be K9 and the long scarf with the smiling face sticking out at the top, you knew it would all be ok in the end.... They dont make em like that anymore
Ok ok lol!
Just to stir up the old memory banks.......
Fireball XL5?
Blakes 7?
Space 1999?
The Tomorrow People?
Issac Asimov - I Robot series?
Frank Herbert - Dune series (my personal favourite)
Oh god......what have I done!

And, of course, Hitchikers!
Asimov's Foundation and Empire
StarGate, StarWars, Bladerunner (mmmm Harrison Ford....)
DrWho
Was 'Robert the Robot' ("On our way 'ome..") in Fireball XL5?
And which puppet sci-fi was Dr Black in?
This is as bad as the best band thread - way too many good ones (well some were carp - but still great if you know what I mean)
I think it was captain black and it was the program Captain Scarlet...
I have a copy of the 7" record with a song about the robot in hitchikers called...'marvin the paranoid android'.....
Dr Who was always the best until the screaming witch bonnie langford came on.....
AAARRRGGGHHH
Captain Scarlet Trivia:
The theme song was performed, according to the credits, by "The Spectrum" but by what name is this band better known?
Ice
