You're not the only one.
HOWEVER...
I'm a bit of a purist... I take my science fiction very seriously and don't regard Star Wars, Farscape etc as genuine science fiction. To me, they're just cowboys and indians with spaceships instead of horses. The idea that you can take a run-of-the-mill Good vs Evil story, set it in the future or outer space, add on some SFX and call it sci-fi is a sham AFAIAC. The spaceship is not enough... I want to know how it works!

Mrs FC Star trek for years , Stargate, and life the universe esp on the radio in the late 70s early 80s...
Gmanxxxx
oh Gman you are too good to be true i like both !!!! also Lord of the Rings MrFC was taken with golum smile
mmmm Mr FC and Gollum....interesting
wink
Gmanxxx
I can't stand written science fiction (every time a friend has given me a book, praising it as one of the best ever, it has been ghastly). But I will confess a little Stargate addiction (nothing to do with Sam Carter, honest), and I don't mind the occasional movie.
Mrs FC... TNG... Troy's orgasm with the alien.... excellent
Gmanxxxx now that is something for roleplay....!!!!
Love it
Love it
Love it
Love it
Did I mention I really love it lol
Spill Mrs FC you are not alone, although I have to admit Star Wars never rocked my boat so I can't discuss that with any knowledge.
likewise T & J ... not sure which Star wars I have seen.... but have not enjoyed what I have seen.... but most of Star trek I can live with.... DS9 was not as upto what I wanted but I do like idea of trills.... jadziah( SP?) can occupy my body any time....
I can be the Dr.... and love idea of so many naked females....
and I do know many females on here woul oblige!!!!
Gmanxxxx
I get subjected to Stargate SG1 every time it's on Sky 1, which seems like always, and I'm not that keen on it - I do like Te-alk tho (I'm no idea how to spell his name redface ) and O'Neil is so witty, oh and Carter is rather sexy in combats - I'm just not keen on the storylines.
Now, Star Trek Voyager - I could watch that forever.
I bet you're going to say that Voyager isn't really Sci Fi though aren't you rolleyes wink
Wouldn't it be good though if they did a film with the Star Trek Next Generation cast in it and they landed on some planet or other and they found a Star Gate and SG1 suddenly appeared from it - that would be great - OK, maybe only in Blue world.
I never liked FarScape - that did my head in - too complicated... though Scorpius had great dress sense 8)
MrFC has no interest in scfi or soaps !! He has that at home with 2 females!! biggrin :D

My dear friend Gman, I am totally lost  Have I missed something? was there a hidden code higher up the thread that has pased me by?
I only ask because it may well be that you are trying to type while receiving the munificent ministraions of the ladies who now occupy (what used to be) the GFZ. If that is the case, then I might just mosy back over. Or it may be that the aliens have doctored your apple juice again.
Let me know mucker
A.
PS I confess I can't take to sci-fi. Don't know why. Can anyone suggest something that might grap this miserable od fart? I love the writing of Iain Banks but just can't take Iain M. Banks. Am I just a Sci-fi free zone?
Well Mr FC... at least take it down in your note book as you were travellin along the high street uin a northerly drection....
gosh I am so accomodatin/!!!! but i do have to say so many of my team are on active service in Africa,,,,
dirt friensd...
Gmanxxxx
I couldn't agree with you more on Iain Banks, Arti. I thought it was very thoughtful of him to use the two names.
I HATE sci-fi
I don't understand it - can't see the point of it and think it's not for me.
Wasp Factory rules!!!

Hello MrsFc lol
Does The Terminator count as sci-fi? surprisedops:
I'll spill my guts;);) Love him to bits.
Ahh Jag's I feel sorry for you, I love sci-fi, I am watching TNG Gambit right now...
Got all the TNG's, most DS9's, waiting on Voyager, love Red Dwarf, even got the old Battlestar Gallatica box set...
Didn't make the scifi convention in London this weekend, too expensive, but sci fi is spice of life, or one of em anyways

Now you see, Idon't understand most of what you wrote. Why haven't they got ordinary names, why are they all at war (is this what the future has to hold?) and why do they all speak in the most uncomprehensible form of the English language ever seen?
Don't feel sorry for me - I'm not missing out on anything! But, I am glad you enjoy it, at least it won't feel left out and unloved!!! lol

It most certainly *is* sci-fi. Voyager (and also TNG) are unlike the original Star Trek in that the writers recognised that the audience had become more sophisticated and actually put some effort into the science side of things. Admittedly there's still a lot of technobabble, but there's also a lot of hard-core speculative science. In the sixties, they just expected you to accept that the Enterprise could travel faster than light... with the later versions of Star Trek, there's a great deal of detail as to how.
I'm going to shut up now... I sound like a ferkin anorak.

Sorry, can't agree with you there, Sci-fi in terms of films, in particular Hollywood, was dead and gone, until the advent of Star Wars, it took Sci-fi to the masses, relaunched Star Trek and is generally responsible for all the quality Sci-fi films/tv progs we can now enjoy, ( and much of the crap too...next you will be telling me Battlestar Galatica was more than a sad soap opera spun by a jealous film studio) you may not like it, but to knock it's role in the enjoyment of a genre you have an affinity for seems blinkered to me....
Sci fi doesn't get any better than Philip K Dick or Ray Bradbury for me, but I do appreciate the role Star Wars played in creating the mood we have for Sci-fi today!!!
The spaceship is not enough... I want to know how it works!

that's called imagination, and its how Sci-fi survives..cos imagination has no end........lol
Don't worry Ice, Anoraks standard sci fi equipment wink
Well Jags I understand what you mean, so here is a little breakdown on the Acronyms:
Trekkies, People with Anoraks who love the below: (Yes I'm one, but no Anorak)
TNG: The Next Generation, follow on from the Original Star Trek series. Very little actual war type stuff, more like galactic police force in some ways...
DS9: Deep Space 9 - Star Trek series that followed TNG, set on a space station, more character based, but ended in wars.
Voyager: Star Trek series after DS9, single lost starship story...
Comedy:
Red Dwarf: Sci fi comedy from BBC2, no war, no violence, fairly good humour...
Spaceballs - Mel Brooks comedy that takes the mick out of as many Sci Movies as he can in one go...
Other Stuff I mentioned:
Battlestar Gallactica: 70's sci fi show from my youth, all war, ok...
So you got a good point Jags, often adversary, often warlike, but then there is Red Dwarf and Spaceballs on the other side...
Thanks tall
What about Matrix? I watched the first one about 4 times and still have no idea what it's about, seriously!!! I then watched Reloaded but only managed about 15 mins cos I was bored!!
It seems that sci-fi is just 'Cops and Robbers', 'Cowboys and Indians' and 'War Films' moved forward to 2204 - a new wardrobe and new ears!!
Give me Pulp Fiction anytime...... lol

Don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking Star Wars etc, I'm just saying it's a different genre from what I regard as science fiction. Where's the "science" in a light saber? Did they explain how it works? That's the difference. True it did put sci-fi of a sort back on the menu (as far as Hollywood is concerned... the literature never stopped), and that led directly as you say to the resurgence of Star Trek, but in my view, and forgive me for being pedantic, much as I enjoy the zap and blast space opera fantasies, real science fiction for me is, as the name implies, fiction based on science.
Ice
nope sorry sci fi nononononononon
mrs FC ... could you repeat that or was it something I was doing to you in the GFZ... I trust the latter!!!

That's exactly why I make the distinction between sci-fi and space opera. I think it's unfortunate that it's all become bundled under the one label, because there really is no more than a superficial similarity.
Compare, for example, 2001 A Space Odyssey and Battlestar Galactica:
One was written by a scientist, the other wasn't, and it's not difficult to tell which is which.

Jags a woman after my own heart, I donn't like sci-fi either!
