I became a permanent truant at the age of 13 and hung out in the public library learning meaningful things, thus avoiding a further 3 years of completely wasted time. My problem with school was always that the teachers were themselves minimally educated and more interested in their own authority than in my needs, and the final straw was the suspension I got for giving my semi-literate English teacher a spelling book.
To this day I'm not sure whether I should despise delusional people or pity them.

Thanks for all the excellent, invariably very personal and heartfelt, contributions.
They illustrate how varied our educational journeys can be.
Most accounts here have proved that it's never too late to make up for educational gaps - but equally there's nothing like getting a thorough education first time around and from teachers who are sympathetic and have an eye for spotting and drawing out talent.
Bullying and the collective idiocy of peer pressure is a great drawback - (Willxx69’s story about not continuing with drama sad ).
They say boys these days have fallen behind girls in academic achievement because it is considered 'sissy' to study at all. How utterly dumb mad
Thanks everyone.
Anymore for anymore?

Conjecture:
The distinction between male and female "roles" is disappearing. Girls are brought up to expect to be able to compete with their male counterparts on equal terms. However, many boys are still saddled with the macho attitudes of their fathers, would feel shame at "losing" to a girl, and therefore choose not to risk it and simply don't bother to compete.
Just a theory.
Hmmmm.....school.
I've blocked those years from my mind to be honest.
In short it still reeks of terrible teachers that spent more time in each others beds than teaching us, a total lack of interest in pupils if they weren't a table-tennis player and 4 years of intensive physical and mental bullying. The latter not the most helpful aid to learning for me. Ho hum.
Got more out of the three years at college than in my entire time at the god awful school I'd endured. The first year was spent playing "catch up" - taking and passing 7 O's & a course in photgraphy.
After that a two year Diploma course in Computing and Data Processing - a fine example in my mind of good breadth. It had programming theory and practice, applied statistics, electronics, advanced mathmatics, business writing and communication and numerous other connected yet different modules. Wonderful as a base for where life takes you....

Ice Pie - your theory is likely to be fact.
