I'm enlightened....apparently has nowt to do with whether I'm up to runnin' the marathon.
I went to moneysupermarket where there were a number of suggestions on where to obtain these devices and the cost and comparisons. I'll leave that to yourselves to sift through, quite worthwhile, I would think, if you have a family home to run.

we was given energy monitors when we changed supplier. was ok at first always checking it to see how much we was using but as to it changing our habits... not a chance with 2 teenage boys regularly in the house and a further 3 smaller kids in a couple of times a week..
far too idealistic in my opinion as we already try our best as the adults to save on the money without it telling us we use too much lol

We were given 1 with ermmmm.. N-Power I think.
I plugged it in did all the stuff and haven't looked at it for 12 months its stuck behind my monitor gathering dust. Might have even unplugged it for my non-efficient vodka fridge drinkies

I believe Smirnoff are doing a deal with a free vodka consumption meter.
On a more serious note, quite what are they supposed to monitor? Sounds like smoke n mirrors to me. And lets face it most grumpy old men dont need an extra reason to moan about the leccy bill.

Its not something worth spending on really. A better device is the plugboard which turns off all your extra kit when you turn off the tv or pc set ups.

Before you buy one, try your electricity supplier as a lot of them give them away free.

Try the 'Owl' does everything it says on the tin, simple to use/install and they're pretty accurate. You can get them new for around £30.

Thanks, I have been leaning towards the Owl

It is a clamp meter which measures the amps being used, no smoke or mirrors

:jagsatwork::jagsatwork::jagsatwork::jagsatwork:
1)a clamp meter doesnt measure the volts smackbottom
2)volts are generated at the power station (which you prob would not get access to so no way of having a brew there)coffee
3)the measurement you were looking for was amps
ooppsss did i ramble then lol
as for an energy meter i wouldnt bother just unplug everything when it is not in use it will save you money

Gotta agree, even as a lover of techie things my energy meter got forgotten very quickly.
You will probably expend more energy setting it up than it saves! wink

I'm in two minds about this whole energy saving malarkey. Surely it's best to use as much as possible to make the demand outweigh the availability of fossil fuels etc, and that will force the energy companies to invest in renewables?
And out of interest, what powers these energy monitors? Are they wind or solar? dunno
;)

Most seam to use about; "Power usage in standby mode: <0.1 watt"

It really is an unnecessary gadget. Your standard meter at the consumer unit is the reliable and accurate guide to what you have used in power.
The device itself runs on a small amount of current, so already you are adding to your power consumption.
Getting the device fitted might end up in either costly work or redecoration.
yada yada...........

It is a very use full gadget, in my view, it will not cost a penny to fit, nor will it cause any damage.
I use one of these on a daily basis so know just how use full they can be
