Shoulda put this in the Steam Room, but there's also a query attached to me post.
Why do these techno geeks put up stoopid error messages whenever you need to be told something important?? mad
David bought me a new Laptop for xmas. Since I've had it, it does this random thing .... where the whole screen goes blank  "Rather irritating" is a bit of an understatement, but the only description I can think of that ain't gonna cost me a fortune in the swear box confused Times like when you've just written your lifestory or similar, and lose the bluddy lot, cos the only way of getting your screen back is to flap the lid down and up again (kind of a laptop version of a kick :? ), then it comes back from a standby mode.
But it doesn't go totally blank, it'll go a colour, at the mo it's going either black or blue (is that a sarcastic response to my 'lappy kick'? ). It has also in previous screens, gone red or green!
So far I've had the Dell men come out twice. I've had a new motherboard and two new LCD screens - and the problem is still there!! :x
The problem is this......

dunno :dunno: :dunno:
WTF?? Why put that? :x Why can't they just say whether the puters alive or dead, and what the re-sus ressusi resussit bring back to life procedure is, if there is one? :dunno:
Or does that gobbledygook say something like that?? How the bluddy ell do I Assert my g_socket?? Not only assert it, but find the bluddy thing in the first place?? I've only just figured out (or not so much figured out as located :? ) the Ctrl button, and now I've gotta go off and find a g_socket to assert? I've looked everywhere, and I can't find my laptops g_socket!!! evil
So can some clever hero please translate my lappy? Please? sad What does it want? What's it telling me?? Hugs, blankets n bits of biscuit don't seem to be working, and need help!
I really don't wanna call Dell out again, have a big row cos a third time of pulling the puter to bits can't be good for it, so will be on the "I want an exchange/refund" argument .... if it's something daft like .... well, like it's me that's doing something wrong to make it have these sulky tantrums :uhoh:
To start with, go to control panel, select power options and set it to never switch off screen, discs or go to hibernate (under mains power only).
See if that does the trick
Aaaahhh!!
You aren't Asserting in LSP are you??   confused :? :? :? :? :? :? wink
It is not a Dell issue, but some software you are running.
I am very surprised no one has Googled the error message. If you do this yourself you should soon find a resolution.
BTW it may be a conflict between Domino and Google desktop.

rotflmao :rotflmao: :rotflmao:
You are such a crap knowall :rotflmao: rolleyes
But, at the mo I'm asserting in PMT mad
Anyway, LSP I'm sure is illegal and makes you see funny things ............ like the elusive g_socket perhaps?
I'm going back to Meatys more sensible answer and advice!!
thanks Meaty kiss I'll try that ...... once I've posted this, and re-read what you've said again :?
Did your new machine come with XP or Vista?
mad :x :x :x
It's just done it again!!! And after I had changed the monitor stuff to "don't you ever do that again" mode :x
St3v3 - It's Windows XP if that's any help? biggrin
Am back on me other Fisher Price equivalent puter - the one that likes my hugs, biscuits n coffee - got a keyboard full of em cool confused

I did wonder that myself! ...... OK I didn't, never occured to me until you just said, and that seems about right....
Until I realised that the only things I've downloaded onto the lappy are AVG and Adaware. The google desktop thing - well, I think it's still in me puter somewhere, but have got rid of all icons cos they were bugging me evil
Edit - also, this problem was happening way before I even downloaded AVG and Adaware :?

Have you got Google Desktop loaded in IE? A net search seems to give lots of results regarding problems such as yours Missy. They suggest uninstalling it. Worth a go biggrin

I'll give it a try - if I can find it confused
It just means that once again, I've got to go and bow down to lappys diva sulks evil Right after I've just given it the hard stare too :?
Off to have a look :?
Found google desktop and uninstalled it :smile2:
Now just gotta wait to see if it happens again. Trouble is, it's so random, it's done it 3 times this evening, but other times it will go days before doing it confused
Fingers crossed.
Oh and another thing - thanks for your help and advice, for taking the time to help out (excluding Sarge rolleyes ) kiss
If one ever googles an error message and you get no hits, then you have proof that you have passed into a parralel universe
Watching this with intrest :notes: as i bought a packard bell lappy last dec, but hardly used it till a few months ago when i last fooked up my pc. Thats when i noticed it started doing exactly the same as yours missy,it drives me crackers but as i have had mine over a year im stuck with it.
So will take lappy round to russ and point him in the direction of this link and see if he can fix it :smoke:

PB's are really easy to restore, just insert the reinstall discs you got with it and follow the instructions. done mine twice now
One thing is for sure Missy ... it wont do it when the tech is there. Puters are sneaky sods and can always manage to make you look stoopid. Got my new Dell lappy friday ... son says sound is crap and vista is a nightmare as it wont accept any software or hardware it doesnt like. Rang Dell up today and we are getting a new 1. If I was you I would tell them you are rejecting it on the grounds that you and it are not compatible. Mind you we have to accept it with vista as Dell doesnt do XP anymore so will have to load XP on and lose vista down the toilet  If Dell wont co-operate you need to find someone who knows what they are doing and invite them for a day... oh and dont let David near it .. him and puters don't mix obviously

It came with disc's  where would i have put them redface
Ahhaa nice to know someone else needs to do a reinstall on a regular basis, and its not just me lol

Nicky
Well if you can't find em and it's an Easynote C3300, let me know
It's a problem notebooks have with Google desktop. I recommend uninstalling Google Desktop and see if it fixes the problem. Either that or do a System Restore to the day before the problem started happening.
It doesn't seem to be a google desktop problem sad It happened again tonight, and I uninstalled the desktop thingy the other day!! The screen just shuts off (although the backlight seems to still be on, hence the screen has a bit of colour, blue again this time).
Plan B anyone? :undecided: dunno
How are statutory rights with this kind of thing? :dunno: Can they keep trying to fix the problem, pulling the lappy to bits over and over? Which could cause another, different, problem - probably just as the warranty runs out!!!! confused
Sorry Missy- Im of no help whatsoever- but you made me chuckle! lol
Although having trouble finding your G_socket eh? Is that a thinly disguised cry for help of a different kind? :giggle:
Have you tried a repair installation, reinstalls windows but doesn't delete your files and programs.
Install the discs that came with it and follow the instructions, instead of doing a new installation select R to repair the current one
Now I tread into this thread (try saying that when yer Irish) wit' a deal o' trepidation.
You can't go back to an early restore point can you? Just possible there's a bit of adware or summat that got lodged?
Sorry I'm a bit of a numpty when it comes to this sort of thing.
